private yard.love it.
things get sorted really quickly and the place is tidy and well maintained.ive got my own section of the yard and my own fields and am left to it!great.no bitchiness or stealing either.
only thing i miss is having people around to ride out with.
At home and rent extra grazing next door but one it's great. Can go see horse in stable (only in winter) at night as late as I like or as early in the morning as I like.
At a livery yard, but on grass livery. I don't particularly like it as I was forced (by my horse) to leave another yard I really liked and I hate everything about my new yard that I can find that isn't quite the same as my old yard. I have been on my own between August and last weekend and I really really hated that though! So lonely! It was nice doing my own thing I suppose.

I am the same but having to move to Hants for a new job - doubt I'll get anything as nice as I have now...not for the money atleast
It took me ages to find people so kind and who don't interfere
No seriously I love it. Livery isn't really an option as there isn't any near me really and with 11 now it'd be a bit pricy. Horses when I look out every window, wickers in the night, wouldn't have it any other way.
At home - which is great - nobody to interfere or nick stuff! No driving to the yard, and can check the horses late at night with no worries. Major down side for me is no one to ride out with.
I have mine at home and i love it - its great to be able to pop out and check on them . Also being able to get up in your jammies to feed then get back into bed!! I agree with Flo_Bell though i miss having a hacking buddy - thats the down side.
Own land down the road a bit, would love stables etc at home, but no space for 4 horses, got Stable block, water & plenty of grazing and I can do what I like!!! Yippee - only bitchiness is from our 19yr old mare!!!
I'm on a large competition yard which I love because I love having people to ride with/talk to but it can be hard when you're having a bad day & want leaving alone. There is quite a nice mix of people who compete in different discaplines & some happy hackers too. One of the major plusses is the facilities but I do sometimes get frustrated because, unlike a lot of the liveries, I don't have my own transport so sometimes feel a bit envious watching people going to compete on days when I can't.
I do envy people who keep their horses at home but think I would miss the company of a big yard & I know my horse would. He's always been on large, busy yards.
At home, I can see them all from my kitchen window
Lots of people in the village to ride with, but I like going on my own as their horses can't keep up with mine and it drives me mad having to keep stopping for them to play catch up!
At Home - live and work on a farm so makes sense to keep the two neds here. Although there are lots of positives the only down side is my lack of motivation from not riding with other people, we're in the middle of nowhere so have to make a real effort to get out and about.
Lucky enough to keep my five at home which is great, but when I get back from a competition, the last thing I want to do is deal with stables and horses having been on the go from 4 am!
That's the only time I wish I was back in full livery!
At home - it's great being able to keep a close eye on them but on the other hand I never get to switch off and am always "just popping round for 5 minutes". At which point family roll eyes and realise they won't see me for at least an hour..
Until a month ago I'd had my horses at my own (well rented) fields/stables for about 26 years, since I was very little. I used to enjoy it but got quite lonely and really wanted the use of a school, electricity etc. Had a brief spell at a yard in the same village, hated it, then moved to a small yard in neighbouring village and really love it.
At home. we are currently in the process of buying more land as well, so thats 4 ponies, currently 4 acres soon to be 10 acres hopefully, i also have 10 stables but some are filled with junk from my dads workshop.
I would be hard pressed to find a yard that took a stallion and broodmares anyway.
I love it, I can do (or not do) what I want, when I want, all pros, no cons. With the exception of one or two people I don't miss my old DIY yard at all.
I've just moved from a small DIY yard to renting my own grazing - and loving it so far
Pros:
I can restrict grazing for my good-doers.
Ponies all get on well - no bullying etc
I can go when I like
Cons:
No stable/electricity - will be looking for different grazing in the winter.
No-one on hand if an emergency - though I have lots of friends just a phonecall away.
at a private livery yard, and it is lovely and George and I love it, there are only 10 horses and the people are really nice and it is really well run.
My boy (4yo Arab stally) lives at IMO the best yard in the world, ever!
It's a stud and also an eventing/training yard, run by a wonderful lady - BHSI, BE-Accredited trainer, Badminton-veteran rider, etc. She also trains pupils for the BHS exams.
So they stand my boy at stud, do all the stud work - semen-collection and shipping, etc - and look after all his visiting mares as well. And they've just started backing him.
The YO/Stud Manager and all the grooms are the most professional, hardworking and nicest people you could imagine. They treat my boy as though he were their own most precious horse - they are always pschoanalyzing him and figuring out what regimes will keep him calmest and happiest. When I visit they chatter away giving me every detail of my boy's news, and they are always happy to help me with anything - nothing is ever too much trouble, and everything is done with a smile.
And it's a relatively small yard (about 25 horses, plus visiting mares) with only full liveries, plus the YO's stallion, mares and a couple of schoolmasters. It's quiet and peaceful, always immaculately clean and tidy, beautiful park-like paddocks, huge stables, etc....
Sounds too good to be true, doesn't it? I am very lucky!
P.S. I try to show how much I appreciate all this by taking a big box of doughnuts or cookies or chocolates for them every time I visit. Pretty inadequate gesture, I know, but it's something, I suppose.
I ticked 'other' as I keep my horse at my friend's house. It's great - I have her company when we hack out, her sister-in-law's expertise when necessary as she owns a livery yard up the road and her son's expertise too as he is a vet.
No cons, except that there is no menege but it's not a problem really as I could hack up to her sister-in-laws to use hers. Also we try not to go on holiday at the same time so there is always one of us to do the horses. If I'm ill or overslept my friend's husband is very good at putting horses out and fetching them in.
I keep my mare on farm livery on a huge beef farm with well over 100 cows, many sheep and 5horses. Two of those belong to my best mates so always have someone to ride wih. The farmer is lovely and lets us ride through all his fields and is rebuilding our blown away stable for us and lent us a sheep trailer to use as a tack room in the mean time. I couldnt ask for any better
