My new filly has a really odd place that she absolutely adores being scratched. It is the lower end of her gullet, just where it meets her chest. She likes you to dig your fingers in either side and really scratch it hard, then she's in horsey heaven. She can take it or leave it if you scratch her in the more usual sweet spots such as the withers or bottom. My old mare used to love her bottom and tail being scratched, and also her withers. My gelding doesn't like being stroked or scratched much except he likes you to hold your hand up in a 'claw' so he can rub his forehead really hard on your fingers. It's amazing how different they all are. Where does your horse like to be scratched? Or does he/she not particularly like it at all?

My pony - buttocks and dock. That is all. She's not remotely cuddly or particularly affectionate, but scritch her buttocks and she deigns to tolerate you.

My youngster - bottom and side of her flank, she's very particular and points to where she likes it.

Everyone else - anywhere is good.

Mine changes his mind every year I think! Just now it's his withers and between his back legs !

Lol, yes some of them are like that! Between the back legs though is a really strange place to like a scratch. I remember now my old mare liked the backs of her hind legs scratching. She usually did it herself though and tipped over my (full) barrow in the process.

Yes indeed, I've been mucking out and he's backed up into my wheelbarrow to try and scratch cue myself waving hands about and shrieking ! He really enjoys it, I figured that it's an area he can't do hiself so I don't mind!

The little hollow on the outer aspect of both hocks! More often when he's moulting. When he fancies a scratch he will stick the offending leg out to the side and carrot stretch right round to look at it, then look at me, then look at the leg ad infinitum until I take the hint. I can be stuck there for half hour at a time while he pulls lots of faces! If I stop unbidden, the leg gets stuck out again and I get stared at. Sometimes he pulls away and I breathe a sigh of relief, only to have the bum swing round and have the other leg presented to me....... :D

Baby coblet, shoulder edge and down towards his chest.

Baby brother - anywhere! Favourite is right under his belly and ears though.

that is adorable!

Bilbo loves a REALLY hard scratch both sides of his withers simultaneously (easiest done from the saddle!) and Xas loves a really hard scratch just beneath his mane half way up his neck. Bilbo also has certain brushes he prefers - the stiffer the better for him.

My tb mare loves to be stratched around the bottom of her ears, especially on the outer sides. She's bend her head right down for it and will stay there for hours if you let her.

Mare and Gelding can take or leave scratching (except that Her Ladyship HAS to be scratched next to her tail if you want to get a tail bandage on, if you don't do it she clamps her tail down and glares at you. More often than not she will have got the bandage or tail guard off before you get where you want to go anyway, but if you scratch her she'll lift her tail and you have half a chance of getting her into the box with it on!).

Tiny Mini Shetland (affectionately known as "That Bl00dy Thing"!) LOVES a good scratch down the underside of his neck, he sticks his top lip up and makes little grunty snuffley noises, and leans on you. It's a good job he's so tiny because you get his full weight on you after a while!

Oh wow, that really is unusual. He sounds very funny!

Baby coblet, shoulder edge and down towards his chest.

Baby coblet sounds quite similar to my filly then. Almost the same place. Belly is an unusual place though. Usually they are ticklish there.

Your mare sounds really sweet. Has she had a foal I wonder? Your gelding must be trying to groom you?

I love it when they like stiff brushes. So much easier!

That's really unusual. Many horses are very dubious about having their ears fiddled with.

Behind the ears.

That's unusual. They are often wary there.

She loves her poll and ears scratched, although I sort of have to knuckle her rather than actually scratch with my nails :) when I do it right she turns her head like an owl and rubs against my hands. Weird horse also likes to have the fleshy bit of her chin cupped in my palm and squeezed gently? No idea what that's about but she puts her chin on my hands and waits for me to do it, so I guess she likes it :D

One of ours like to be scratched right where the vet injects which is handy, the vet always gives him a scratch and then slips the needle in and pony loves him! Thinks he's a lovely man who turns up gives him scratches and then leaves lol He also loves to be scratched on his chest he then starts swaying :D Our latest 'wild' mare who we couldn't get near 10 weeks ago now loves scratches behind her left ear :)

its disgusting . . but . . she loves her udders/teats/boobies to be scratched! don't even know how we worked it out but she loves it if you pick all the scum/grub/minging stuff off of her teats! she lifts her back leg up and looks at her flank when she wants a scratch - demanding diva!

but for something slightly less minging a wither scratch will do if she can groom the back of your neck

Exactly the same as my elder mare... youngster's bag however is always clean and dry. Any contact is acceptable to them, but fave is to back up to me, and for me to lean against their rear ends and give a good hard scratch on their gaskins and inner thighs... nice when we lean into each other, but difficult to satisfy two mares at once. A slightly raised tail means it's time to gently scratch that tiny patch of skin on the underside of the base of the tail.

My youngest boy, on the other hand, prefers attention at the other end.... nothing he likes better than having several fingers in his mouth massaging his gums and tongue, and making his teeth squeak. He'll ask for it by opening his mouth and taking a step backwards.

My mare's absolute favourite spot was between her front legs. She would pull the most blissful faces and would nudge me to keep going if I stopped scratching. She could have stood like that for hours if only my arms were up for it...

She also liked a good face cuddle and would lower her face so I could rub her forehead under her fringe, but you couldn't beat the first spot.

My filly likes to be scratched in and around her left hand ear. So so with the right - also likes neck. wither and bottom, but the ear make her eyes go droopy in ecstasy.
