Ok, I feel a little silly posting this as I know it's not exactly important, but my filly foal's star seems to be vanishing! I thought I was going mad when I went to see her today, but I came home and reviewed my pics and it does indeed seem to be getting smaller:

I know it's a little ridiculous but it's her only marking and I was rather fond of it! Has anyone seen this happen before? Is there any chance it will come back or might it vanish completely?

well it looks like it has got smaller, as it has changed shape aswell so that suggests it isnt just the head getting larger.. maybe its just the changing coat and the star may come back sometime next year? i dont really know but what a gorgeous foaly :D

I think her head is getting bigger rather than the star smaller! As for the shape,my guess would be that now she has started changing coat the hair is longer and able to 'move' and change the direction it is laying. I have never heard of a marking disappearing on a non-grey horse. As far as my knowledge goes the skin underneath the white hair is different and that makes the hair grow that colour.

The white markings on horses faces do change shape, they seem to get smaller. As the head grows the skin area is increased, but the white markings don't, they actually seem to decrease in size. I think your foal will loose its white star in time to probably just a few hairs.

Here you will see Legrande's blaze looks nothing like it did when he was a yearling!!! He had a broad blaze then and now he seems to have a large star which runs into a large snip!!! The portion inbetween is now just a shadow or counter shading.

Very strange

Thanks for the replies!
I will resist the urge to shave her head and see what the skin looks like underneath! Cruiseline, those pics are fascinating, I'd never have thought a facial marking could change so much. It looks like I'll have to get used to her new look head. On the plus side, I'm looking forward to showing her, no white bits to clean and easy to get shiney!

Thank you Charley, she's my first/only foal and I'm very proud of her!
