Dont want to give too much detail as not advertising him and need to think stuff through before selling anyway but got a 3yo welsh b. lovely looking and papered but not your chunky old fashioned type. was going to back end of summer but got too many horses and rider has already lost interest so his no use to me in long run. So he will be sold as well handled which he is and ready for the start of backing (long reining so on)

Problem is, no idea what i shud ask? I need a quick sale to the right home but dont want to give him away for free to any dodgy person :S he also has a sarcoid on his stifle, how do I mention this in advert and obviously I would assume whatever i price him at, will have to knock money off due to sarcoid ?

Id have a look at what others are going for - i wouldn't want to say a price and insult you because i imagine he is a lovely boy - all i know is some people are very put off by sarcoids - i've had three horses with sarcs - admittedly that is due to them being ex racers and probably slightly low immune systems - the thing is as he is young usually they get them between 3 - 7 yrs this isn't fixed and some do develop later as i had happen, but as a general rule its more common at that age so it is possible he could get more - its not on an area that will cause him problems for ridden although obviously they won't like it in showing so that may reduce some peoples interest, another thing is it a mushroom shaped one i.e rising off the leg or a flat one ? have you definatly had it comfirmed as a sarcoid ?

hey thanks not sure yet as not had vet out. its a size of a penny slightly raised, warty looking with a bit of redness to it. would i be better to wait, treat it and then advertise? my worry is he needs a home and someone to back him very soon

I recently bought a horse with sarcoids (i didnt know he had them when I bought him) had him vet checked and vet advised that the seller should have knocked £1000 off asking price to cover any future treatment. still wouldnt swap him for the world but wish I had been told of the condition first as we read some really scary stories and for a short while even thought it may hav been life threatening!

I sold a horse with minor sarcoids and sold him no problems - however I priced him accordingly and he had a lot of positives that out weighed the sarcoid issue.

I always use Horsemart for selling, and touch wood, they have not failed me yet.

Good luck and hope you find a buyer

I know what your saying but for sarcoids to be life threatening they have to literally be peppered in them or in certain places (usually somehow internal) or a very serious case - its extremely rare for it to get to that point and actually a higher rate of horses have them than what you might think - i rescue racehorses and i was told that about 50 - 60 % of horses coming out of training have them.
I wouldn't say necessarily treat it - but in summer they can become very aggrivated by flies and this may cause a problem - i had one that i treated a mild case like you have with thuja tablets and cream - cost about £25 in total rather than a few hundred for liverpool cream from the vet - id give that a go give him two tablets in morning and afternoon and put the cream on the sarc and see what happens - it worked for me - i'm not saying it will but it did for mine - for more serious ones on another horse had to have liverpool cream and took about 4 months to go - i wouldn't be in a panic if he's three its not imperitive he gets broken now but i'd give the herbal route a go and if its not workign then just make potential buyers aware of it - £1000 off is very steep but i think totally depends on horse, where sarc is, how big/how many etc and considering your lad has a fairly 'nice' one in the scheme of things i wouldn't be too worried about getting it removed if it isn't causign him hassle - just my opinion though.

not got him out yet only just noticed it i have a picture i will upload in one second. but if its treatable i will do it but his only 3rd party insured so cant come to anything too costly

hmm cant upload it for some reason, or find a pic of another that looks like it, sorry

Your probably still looking at about £250 for getting it checked by vet sent to liverpool expert that they use and application of the cream as its so strong they have to use gloves etc they dont' just leave you the pot and they usually do two or three applications so you'll pay for vet call out each time they come out. I had issues to which you may have in that it can sting them after the cream gets to work and mine swished his tail - as the sarc was just under his belly the cream would get on his tail and then flick onto his rump which then caused him little hair burns - learnt my lesson and tied up his tail but just as a warning in case you do decide to do it! in all honesty i'd just advertise and make the buyers aware of the issue and as someone else said advise that the good far out weight a small sarc

Thanks stormygale. My worry is I already only wanted under £500 for the pony but dont want such a low price that he goes to the wrong hands? Maybe I should just get vet out to confirm what type of sarcoid it is so buyer knows

I would do as you have said - get the vet, get a full verdict, then state clearly issue in ad. I would stick as near to the £500 mark but maybe say 'or near offer' so you are above the meat market.

Some buyers will look beyond the sarcoid, some will discount him because of it, but at least if you are honest you will get no comeback.

Hope it all works out

I have a 2 yr old with a couple of tiny sarcoids, I didn't notice them when I bought him in Feb as he was so fluffy! He wasn't yet 2 when I got him and is a conny x tb and I paid £700 for him, not sure if that helps?
