I have been searching for a horse on behalf of a friend with no luck whatsoever. We are looking for something between 15hh and 15.3hh and it doesn't have to be a worldbeater, just something safe that will cope with a novice rider but they must be like hens teeth because I just can't find anything that sounds suitable in the South West. They are either young, or when you ring up about them they aren't actually as bombproof as their advert suggests.

Any ideas for any places to look before I totally give up?

my 4 year old im selling is as bomb proof as they come, ive tried spooking the damn beast but nope! car horn, ballons, lorries, random signs, tipper trucks, being chased by a yapping jack russell, plastic bags. and nope he just looks at me as much to say yeah cause im bothered!

so they are out there! (understand mine is to young point was they do exist. )

They're both in the South East but I've heard good things about Clip Clop Traders and Prestwood Farm. I've seen a few horses from Prestwood Farm out and about with their new owners and the horses do seem to be what they say on the tin. Not cheap and they won't do you a deal but I gather their reputation means there's no need for them to do deals!

jhoward - trouble is, even though WE think they're bombproof, when a total novice gets on, they don't feel quite as "straight" as say a 11 or 12 year old would if you see what I mean. We tried 2 lovely cobs out on Saturday, a 5 year old and a 6 year old, but neither were quite "made" enough and still a little green at times.

suziq - thanks for that, that's really interesting to know, I guess we may have to travel farther afield if we can't find anything around here.

when you find one tell us where from!
they are like gold dust and tbh they dont get sold on all to often. My old pony was totally bombproof, but he wasnt sold, he was too precious, he stayed with us for over 20 years until he went to the big green field in the sky :)

Look for a teenage ride and drive - I've always found that horses who have been driven are very steady, they also tend to have more experience in the wider world than the typical novice type. Be warned :D a true bombproof horse will have been there, done that, got the t shirt and will have strong opinions which a novice owner could find challenging especially on the ground.

As others have said, horses like this are rare and much prized so don't often pop up in the ads - try word of mouth - farrier, tack/feed shop, RC, PC etc might know of somebody who is thinking of selling theirs.

I know you say younger ones are not 'made' enough, but (and I know this is really unhelpful) I sold one last week. A 6yo, but utterly safe.

I know of one down our yard. Well 2 actually. From an extremely sound owner who won't sell if they're not going to be suited :)

One's a complete happy hack, though has had 2 foals in past. 11 years old, beautiful welsh D mare about 15hh. Happy to go round in the school, pop small jumps/logs/etc and a really easy ride I think.

Other's a 6 year old 15.2/15.3hh warmblood x type I think, bit lazy hacking on his own but never does anything in any situation. Never bucked, been rude, etc. She's had him since he was broken, never put a foot wrong, so laid back he's horizontal type. Jumps, done fun rides, team chased I think, clear rounds, locals and spent this year hacking round the Cotswolds mostly with a lady who had him on loan for a while.

Wiltshire too :)

PM if of any interest!
