hi, guys

well i have a pony in need of a home and i want to advertise him and gift him to someone but i dont want to attract a dealer wanting to make a fast buck, so where should i put an advert in?

thanks!

Anywhere you like, unless you vet homes carefully whereever he's advertised he'll either go to a dealer for resale or off for meat.

This is a bit strong! My current ned was free, he's young and green as grass but no 'issues' I adore him and have spent the last 2 weeks nursing him through colic surgery, I was found through my instructor who knew my loan was coming to an end. so I would say this would be a good place to start, call local instructors and ask if they know anyone suitable would be my advice x

Be aware if giving the pony away as theres a person from Newport who pretends to give the animal a permanant loving home but instead she takes it to POTTERS.She targets free horses/ponies. I would find someone local if I was you,a person you know VERY well.
If you give the pony away, your asking for problems.Cant you loan it out instead????????

Potters has had so many horses this winter that they're only fetching about £20 per horse atm, so unless the horse is right next door there's no making money from freebies going to potters as the petrol costs more

Really a loan home (I'm assuming pony is only for companion?) is probably the safest bet... ideally one that is close to you for regular check-ups.

So yours wasn't advertised then but was word of mouth. OP wants to know where to advertise!

As others have said, try to give him to someone you know, or friend of a friend. That way you can be a bit more sure of his future than if he went to a stranger.
Is there anything wrong with the pony? Is he rideable? There's a lot of horses around currently being offered for free as companions only, so if this is the case with yours you might find it difficult to find somewhere for him.
Best of luck to you though, I hope you find him somewhere lovely.

no nothing wrong with him but hes a colt and only just backed and in this market nobody wants them :( iv asked around with no luck and i really dont like loaning. its such a shame i have no use for him and hes nicely breed and would make someone a nice pony but its becoming more apparent that lots of ponies aren't selling even for peanuts and theres lots of free ponies around at the moment but i dont want to just give him to anybody, so any ideas would be great :D if all else fails he will just stay in the field

You may have more luck I you had him gelded. I couldn't give a colt away last may until he was gelded. I had the time of year etc on my side as well!

If you have him gelded, then put him up for sale for around £200 to get back the cost of having him cut, you'll have more people interested.
How big is he? Seems people have trouble to even give colts away, especially if they're under 13hh. Hope you find him a lovely home, all you seem to hear is horror stories, but I'm sure there's plenty of genuine folk out there who would love to give him a home. x

This. Geld him and sell him for what it cost you..

First of all I would say geld him, also what is always bandied about is dont let a dealer get him.

I buy and sell on a few horses and ponies not on a large scale but I never sell on colts even if they are young and I dont make much money from sale.

To be honest to collect one pony unless you are in the area sell on as a riding horse as a colt is not going to make alot of money, to geld an older horse or pony is more expensive you are more likely to get someone without the finances to keep him if giving him away.

If you really want to gift him you need to give him to a family who is known by a reliable source be that a good friend family member or something like the local pony club or riding club.

Do yourself and the pony a favour geld him and if he is a nice sort or even just a kind sort you will be able to sell him to a nice home.

The other thing I forgot to say was you dont want someone to make a fast buck but if you could get somebody who can really add selling value to the pony making him have a true value in the market can only be doing him good.

.

Dont let a dealer get him??
But doesnt your statement make you a dealer?? ;)

OP, what type, breed, height is your pony?

If you put him on some of those pages on FB, you've got a chance of checking out people you don't know before they come to see him.

If there is no way you could get him going a bit and find someone local I would advertise him without a price and say that it is negotiable to suitable home. Loans are a good way of sorting out good homes, maybe loan with a view to buy?

Agree. Geld him!!!

Please do the sensible thing and geld him before trying to find him a new home, you will have more luck finding a home for a gelding anyway!

Get his knackers off and you will be able to sell him.

As above GET HIM GELDED then you might stand more chance of finding a good home. I wouldn't take on a colt ever again, too many problems.
