Hi,
I really need to find a good hack/companion home for my horse as my circumstances have changed and Im getting a bit desperate. Anyone know where I could advertise him to find him a nice home? He's free to the right people but I dont know where to advertise him!! I need him gone asap.
Im broken hearted about the whole situation so please I am really after help, if I didnt have to do this I wouldnt.

not sure if you will get done by the FC for doing it but put a bit more details on your post - not an ad though - if it were me I would try local feedshops first then maybe horsemart/horsequest etc. Also do a search on the forum as there was someone looking for a companion recently but I cant remember where or who.

Hope it all turns out ok, it must be heartbreaking.

Try local horsey groups on fb. I had a lot of enquiries when I advertised my daughters horse for a nominal amount. Ended up giving him to a lovely HHO forum member.

Not that gorgeous bay on your profile page? He's a stunner and what a shame you have to get rid so quick.

I'll say the obvious about have you tried for a sharer or loan at least until your circumstances change.

Try your local riding schools as they may take him on if he's safe to ride.

Otherwise Preloved, Friday Ads, Horsemart, Horse Ads etc

Without sounding like an ad maybe you could describe him on here in case anyone knows of someone who's looking.

If i was closer i would deffo offer to at least share with you...humph

1) there is another thread in here by bright eyes looking for a companion. Why not contact them?

2) Be VERY aware of the risks of offering a horse free to a good home, or on loan. Too many free to a good home horses have ended up being sold on or have been hurt or have hurt someone else. Please try not to let that happen.

He's a 17h tb gelding, gorgeous boy. He has a 'miles on the clock' problem with his back leg so can only be hacked or as a companion. He might do some inhand showing as he's handsome. He is good to load, catch, box, clip etc. He is a lovely boy, and only 10! He's in St Albans.

I do know the issues with free to good home, but as I said, if I didnt need to do this I wouldnt. Im feeling bad enough as it is.

I'm sure some people are going to jump on you for this I'm waiting for it BUT good homes are out there iv got 1 and know off many more who have really good homes that were given free. Please just be carefull and any chance u could perm loan?

Can't you do permanent loan? Or sell above meat value? Anyone who can afford the upkeep can afford to pay a small amount. And whilst there's a small chance free horses can find good homes, if you don't charge meat money there's a very good chance someone else will make meat money from him.

I would try preloved as it is free to advertise and i have sold 2 horses on there that had not shifted on horsemart.
However i do know of 3 loan / companion horses that have either gone missing or been sold on as riding horses, that should never have been ridden, please be very careful.

A vet advised my friend to get her mare freezemarked before she sent her away as an unrideable companion, that way she could never be sold as a ridden horse again. If i remember correctly there is a mark they use for ''loss of use''.

Good luck finding the right home for your horse, I am sure the perfect person is just waiting to find you and your horse :O)

The 'loss of use' mark is an L in a circle...my girly has it...but no-one ever knoews what it means!

Freezemarked with 'companion only' sounds like an idea...never thought of that before.

Just to add i got this chap from a facebook friend of a friend, he was offered free to good home on the site, all he needed was some training, education and manners, I was very honest with the old owner and said that when he was ready I would sell him on however long that is, she was ok with this and he is a super little pony that will make some child a great pony. The old owner was happy with 1 less mouth to feed.
To make the sale official i paid £1 and got a receipt.

Great idea - if it was under the saddle only the owner/ rider would ever know it was there but would mean horsey would not be sold as anything but a companion, maybe you could get the freezemark company to give a written receipt to say why the hore was marked, then give a copy to the new owner. I would also keep a copy myself and the details from the horses passport then in future you would have the means to trace him if you wanted.

Oh thank you Naturally - but we are sorted, thank you x :)

I've PM'd you Mulled Wine.

I know what people think of free to a good home and I have said that. I am an emotional mess at the moment and dont really need people talking about the meat man. I am doing the best I can in a horrible situation and will do everything possible to find a nice home for my boy. I could pack him off to a dealer but Im not doing that. Im a nice person in a difficult situation. Thank you for your advice everyone. If anyone is interested then please pm me. I am only trying to do the best for my lovely boy.

There is but it doesn't stop anyone from riding the horses, its just so the insurance don't end up paying out again for a horse that's already a write off. If people want to ride horses they will, a brand won't make any difference, sellers would just say it got better since it was branded.

Thanks Bertolie :) As Bertolie has said I got her horse free and it wasnt because I couldnt afford him etc and cant afford upkeep and im going to sell him on etc... I think thats an unfair tag. Just because it has happened when people offer horses for free doesnt mean everyones like that... Horsey fb pages seem to be a good idea & project horses is a very good site-I got my coloured from there :)
