We want to take Cropi out this weekend for a little jolly but don't know where to go!!! We have got our first show in 2 weeks so just want to take her out in the trailer, go for a hack somewhere and spend some time with dh.

We don't want to go too far, about 30 mins from Colchester, hubby will be on his bike so the beach is out really.

Anyone got any suggestions??

Thanks

Thorndon country park, weald country park?

Sorry not sure about the distance from Colchester, but they're in Essex and good to ride.

Are you a member of east anglia farm rides?

I live near you, you could go to mersea island Do ou have an ordinace survay map as they asre good. you can hack around flatford too

let me know if you need any more ideas

I was just looking at their website, yes I am a member. We have been to Mersea before on the beach and it was lovely (ignoring the fact I ended up at A&E with a broken hand!!) I was wondering if the traffic would be bad going to Mersea on a Bank Holiday????

Where can I park the box at Flatford. do you know??

Thank you

edited to say thank you!!!

The national trust car park I think they let you i would call first its 32.50 I think they let you hack around one of the walks its not overly long but you can add some road work (sign says hacking allowed in good weather). We often go on a bank holiday and walk the dog its not normally too busy but there are dogs I always wish i have Ship with me!!

I am near the farm rides for East anglia in gosfield, if you ring them they will tell you which farms you can park at

Hope it helps

edited to say: Mersea is not normally bad in BH traffic most important bit is to check tide times for the stroud!

Is this at Flatford?? I'll have a look at the NT website and see if there is any info on there.

Is that over Braintree Way?? They are great the EAFR. I'm near Great Horkesley, we can hack out for hours on them, well worth the money. Its gives us access to gallops too

Think I'll give them a ring too, if I don't use them this weekend its good to know for the future

I'll check out Mersea's website and see when high tide is

Thanks for the ideas, I've been racking my brains all day and not coming up with much!!

do you know wixs equestrian centre?

they hire out their farm tracks. its lovely to hack round and so are the surrounding villages. its not expensive and they have plenty of parking.

there is several nice pubs nearby to for a lovely lunch.

We have amazing hacking- you are welcome to drive to ours- and i will come by bike with you up to hatfield forest if you like- we have 4 hours of hacking with hardly any roads- and all on prepared soft tracks/fields. Im about 40 min drive of colchester.

I am in Great Dunmow. We have an arena to off load in and a yard to tie up/tack up etc too. Hacking is superb- no gates eirther! But there are a few banks to go up and down. Pleanty of canter spots if you want too. I am around most weekends/next week as its half term (im a teacher so have holidays next week) your hubby is more than welcome! PM if you want my number

Just bear in mind we are 40min away

What about Friday woods? Thats nice riding there

Intrested in the gallops information if someone could pm it to me, my TB mare needs a good gallop in a "safe" environment

I would recommend Wix too, loads of box parking and they're ever so friendly. Is a nice open farm ride with lots of xc jumps, starting very tiddy.
Don't know what the riding is like around Flatford but have spent a lot of time there and never seen much evidence of horses down by the river itself? The fields are grazed by lots of cows and there are stiles etc. Never thought of it as particularly riding friendly, but I may be wrong.

Try the Essex Bridleways Association for more ideas?

Thanks for all of your replies. This weekend we are going to take up Shadowmonkey's very kind offer and box up to her. I'm really looking forward to it and hope its the beginning of many outings out over the summer

I've pm'd those who have asked about the gallops
