I have a 5month old foal who i would like to buy a companion for as I think she is becoming rather bored at home with my older horses. I am looking for something up to 1 year old who she can have a tear round the field with and also be her companion when she is weaned. I would like to spend as little as possible!! Is my best bet to go to a sales? If so any recommendations?? Really not bothered about breed etc.

Sales are a very good place to go as long as you keep your eyes wide open, and buy because you need, not because you feel sorry for. If you buy from a sale, you should also have quarentine facilities in place to be sure nothing nasty gets spread around.

Have you considered adopting a youngster, World Horse Welfare have lots of youngsters available for a small rehoming fee, when they are old enough you can send them back for training and backing. Have a look at their website.

The last Beaulieu Road Sales, average prices for colt foals (reg NF) were 46 guineas, filly foals average 83 guineas... Shetland foals were going for more money than these.

I'm sure there are similar sales nearer to you though...

What do you plan to do with your new purchase in the future?

A bad foal is as expensive to keep as a good one.
