We are still looking for a companion for our mare and would love to rescue a horse, we want to own the horse so we're not looking at charitys as they only loan them to you.
Are there sales in the south that sell horses like this, what about the horses that are going for meat as well? how can we find out how to get one of those?
This might seem like an odd post but we've been looking for a companion for weeks and all we can find are horses that can still be ridden or really big horses, that are just not suitable, so we thought maybe we'd like to look for a horse that really needs some TLC.
Thanks

Personally I would go down the charity route - not sure what the issue is with it being on loan, it's actually more an adoption that a loan as it is with a rescue dog. Essentially the charity always 'own' the horse but it is yours to keep. The WHW look like they are desperate to rehome horses at the moment (see H&H news page) but there are plenty of others, the RSPCA, Blue Cross, Redwings - the list goes on. We had a horse on loan from the Blue Cross for many years - he was 36 when he passed away. They generally leave you to your own devices - he was checked on once a year that was it.

The plus side of adopting from a charity is also, should the wosrt happen and for any reason you can no longer care for the horse (we never know what's round the corner) they would be able to rehome it/take it back.

I know a horse who really needs a good home. The trouble is he already has a bad home where his owner completely neglects him and he is really suffering as a result. Owner has him up for sale but wants rediculous money for him so no one is ever going to buy him

It's really sad as he is the sweetest horse

Sorry this is probably no help to you, but if anyone has a spare £3k and wants to spend it on a lovely natured horse who has bad arthritis and will only ever be a slow hack then I know of just the one for you :l

What is the problem with loaning from a charity? there are advantages, such as always having somewhere to go should anything go wrong, and if something happens and it needs expensive medical care, if you really can't pay, they will.

Horse World and homes. The problem with that is they only want homes no more than an hour and a half away, so limiting their market. I can see why if they have to keep an eye on them, but it's still a restriction. I felt the same when the donkey charity was looking for homes. I'd love a donkey and have 11 acres of land, field shelter and stables, but there seemed so many stipulations it put me off applying.

They do have too many stipulations, we have nothing to hide and have a lovely clean and tidy yard they can inspect, but we looked at one web site the other day and they wanted the horse freeze marked, it insured with a certain company, a letter from someone who has known you for at least 10years, and a monthly donation for the horses life, not being funny but if they want to re-home a horse they should'nt have to do much more than a very good home and knowledge check.

Il check out south hants pony association, we only live up the road from them!
All the others are too far away, Ive tried looking up meat men in my area but google wont bring anything up in the hamsphire area! and ive tried to find horse auctions in hampshire as well, but not much luck with that either!

I know of a lady who has a gelding she would like to loan/give away as a companion. I think he is about 15.2, aged 19 and he is the fattest horse I have ever seen! He has an old shoulder injury so is lame if ridden for more than about 10 minutes, although it's possible if he lost some weight more may be possible. He will soon be losing his field companion and if they can't find him a nice home, they are considering having him pts. Please pm me if you think you might be interested in him. Oh and he's in Bedfordshire.

there are loads of horses advertised which may face a horrid fate if not sold, but why not try googling abotoirs near you and give them a call asking where they get the horses from. or you could google horse sales, and generally you can see the ones who really need a home, especially when you view them prior to the sale, and the way the owner regards them. i used to work for a guy who was a part time dealer cause he liked the cash, and he used to really regard the horses in contempt, when people werent around he would kick at them for not being pretty enough etc. worse job ever...reported him to rspca.

This isn't the case with WHW. I have 2 on loan from them. They only ask that you become a member, and at £2 a month it's hardly a lot. Some of the ponies/horses they ask a small donation on top of your membership. WHW are so easy to deal with.

Either go to the next beaulieu road sales or put a wanted add on nfed? I bet someone would bite your hand of wanting to take on their expensive field ornaments!

I am also looking for a companion pony. I have just googled south hants horse and pony association and nothing came up. How do I get in touch with them?

I believe RSPCA adoptions are for 1 year of adoption then if all the checks are fine after the year you own the horse. Otherwise any charity that loans a horse by law (under the AWA) will remain responsible for it, therefore would need to ensure regular checks are done for the rest of it's life. The RSPCA doesn't have the resources to keep checking so they do it for a year, then the horse is signed over to you as the owner. This system maybe changing at some point so best to call them and discuss it.

LOL shils, i didn't notice the date!!!

hey if u r in hampshire a knackerman is mark chambers 01483 505524 he does alot in that area so may be worth giving him a call if u really want to go down that route...however i would say a horse charity is also a worthy cause but i see what u all mean re the red tape its not ideal....
