I want to move my horse on to my new field , but need a companion first, so have been thinking of a sheland / small pony.

I have seen adverts etc, but do little shetlands really go for £500 , I did think perhaps nievely(sp) that I could pick one up for around £200.

Am I that far off the mark, anyone any suggestions, I have looked at the local rescue centres but need one asap.

why not go to a horse auctionand and pick up one from there you will at least be saving it from the knacker man.
and you will not be paying a lot for it.

Did think of that KickandShout, but would end up buying far too many, may have to think about this option though, I think its Derby Market this saturday.

Henley Horse Sales....next to nothing!

We got our little one from preloved for about £100 and she is a gem! There are a few minature studs locally that have older ones sometimes and a rescue for minitures at Mansfield that advertises on preloved sometimes.

Any excuse for a pic!

£500 is really not that much money!

It depends what you're looking for. If you're happy to have something unreg or with not very special conformation or not great paces, then you probably can pick something up cheaper.

We breed and show shetlands, and the cheapest priced pony we ever sell is £495, and they go up from there. But then all ours are county standard, vaccinated, microchipped, fully handled and many have been shown, some have been broken to ride and drive.

Once in a while we have in unregistereds which are given to us for rehoming, and they are a bit cheaper if not broken to ride/drive.

I'm always mystified why people think shetlands should be cheaper just because they're small?

You get what you pay for.

I have said this once before on another thread.
Contact the local breeders, as many of them have retired broodmares that they end up selling at markets because they cant give them away (how back to front is that!).

I appreciate that £500 is not alot of money, but for a companion who will do nothing but eat , I think it is.

Yes if you are wanting to show etc then I take your point that you get what you pay for, but all I'm after is basically a babysitter on 4 legs.
