Where to go for barefoot advice for numpties

So, my horse has gone a tad lame again so the shoes sre coming off. I am wondering whether, for his long term hoof health, the best thing is to take the opportunity of trying to manage him barefoot in future as the shoes are going to come off anyway. He is 18 so probably his serious competing days are behind him.

I would therefore really like to understood what changes I should look for in a barefoot horse and also have enough information to have enlighten discussions with the trimmer. Where do I go to get the information?

I am really looking for the ABC guide for beginners that will help me to understand some of the more technical blogs on the Internet.

Hello OP some horses transition to Barefoot no problem. But we often find a few dietary tweaks may be needed. Low sugar, low starch, lots of fibre, high quality minerals. Bare Hooves respond to workload by changing speed and quality of growth in response to changes in work and surfaces. This takes time, the hoof can't do this overnight. You need a sympathetic hoof care professional - many a horse is made sore by inappropriate sole/frog removal.
 
LucyPriory I do however had a really good farrier who is suprisingly pro bare feet, however, whereas with shoes I have left my horses feet in his care, with barefoot I just want to have a little bit more understanding/input. I wish though I lived nearer you and could have some of your fabulous experience and knowledge.
