where to grab a bargain horse?

hi,

i am looking for another horse as a project for the summer. i haven't got much specification height wise, i would be happy with a little 13.2hh to bring on or up to a 16.2hh that needs reschooling.

So i am wondering where the best place is to look for a bargain.

I've been to horse sales before just looking and i have seen some decent horses going relatively cheap, or do you think its best to stay clear of horse sales?

i don't mind if the horse has issues, i enjoy working with problem horses, however i wouldnt want to buy a horse that has health problems or unsoundness.

Any ideas where to look?

Ex-race horses - if you go direct to the yards they often have racers that haven't made the grade for whatever reason and are ideal project material.

At the yard where i keep my horse, they sometimes sell pointers who've failed to make the grade racing, but are really nice horses in every other respect, for between £500 - £1500 to people to reschool.

That is true! There was a horse in the Friday-Ad once, he was 13.2hh and had been declared dangerous, the owners believed he would make a good project or companion, however they didnt have the time and didnt want him to go back to the meat man... they wanted £2500!!! The same week there was another pony the same height, supposedly a prefect angel for £1500!! amused me for the day

I found mine in the under £1000 section of horsemart. Just keep checking it and you may get lucky.
Otherwise, Ascot sales if you go in with eyes wide open or direct from the trainer.

How much are you looking to spend?
 
Try a "wanted" ad or two. I do it practically every year, have a giggle at some of the replies, feel sorry for a lot more, find something spot on eventually every time. Good luck!
 
thanks everyone, thats really helpful, someone else actually told me today wanted ads usually get a good response so i think i'll try that.

I do have quite a budget, ideally i'd like to just find something on loan, but i don't really have much more than £1000 to spend, its not that i can't afford to keep a horse, its just the initial cost. If i spend about a thousand that allows me to pay for vetting, vacs, teeth, farrier, tack, rugs, etc.
