where to start with tracing your neds past?

I had NOTHING on my horse when I got him - no passport, no name, nothing. The only things I knew were that he was a showjumper, and that the people I bought him from bought him from someone in Wales called Julia Swanson.
So...I called BSJA, described him, and asked if a horse his age (19 at the time) was on the records. They found the most likely match, and I called the people who registered him to see if they remembered him (he's got some very distinctive markings). They remembered him, and I have found out every last detail.
My hairy, skinny, muddy horsey that I pulled out of a field for £10, was a puissance horse in Holland, and then came over to England and did Grand Prix dressage! He was INCREDIBLY naughty in his youth, and he bucked Guy Williams off in the ring. Twice.

If you're persistent enough, and prepared to call random people and say "did you once have a nice grey horse with a funny line of flea bite markings on his right shoulder etc...??" you have a good chance of finding out more about them! I've even been sent photos of my beautiful boy jumping crazy high walls...

I brought my horse from a horse dealer, needless to say no history given. I took his sire number and traced him through the internet, found out where he had competed and with what club. He is only 6 so it was very easy. I am now in contact with the girl who used to compete with him, she has helped me with any queries about him. Even found a video clip of him when he had been used in one episode of a programme on the tele!!

I went back through his passport and looked up people on facebook/google etc.

Managed to trace his whole history. Been really really usefull!

Luckily the first person i traced actually had a pic of her doing xc on him as her profile pic on facebook! so that made it a bit easier.
Another person i googled and she happened to be the secretary of a ponyclub so she was easy to find on google.
Another i traced by google and matching the name to the location.
All were really really helpfull and it was well worth the effort.

I knew my lad came from Holland, so contacted the Fjord studbook there. They managed to trace him through a microchip number. Unbelievably, he was imported into this country with the wrong microchip number on the passport....

I traced Lola's history by writing to the breeder on her passport. As it happens the breeder sold her to the dealer i brought her from so i've got a complete history for her now. Gem, however came with no passport, freeze mark or microchip. Dealer knew absolutley nothing, think he had her from another dealer, and was called 'number 6' so we don't even know her birth name, we called her Gem when we had her. I would put ad's & things up but i'm sure no-one is going to know a 16hh 12 yr old TB mare, brown with no distinguishing features who's real name is unknown! Try tracing equines website too, i think a few have had success through there :)

I was lucky enough with my mare that shed had the same owner since a baby until she was 5. As for my pony we e-mailed the stud in Holland he came from and got lots of info about how he did in hand showing and about his parents etc. Look in the passport and make some calls, hope you find some info :)

I traced my horses history through tattersalls sales catalogues to find out how long previous owners had him etc and found his family tree on it lol and then found videos of him racing on the irish point 2 point website ... its so interesting finding out new things about ur horse :)

I traced a previous horse I had owned, using this forum.... this was before passports were mandatory. But my horse had had a freezemark.

His name had been changed, but someone recognised his freezemark and through this lady replying to my post, I managed to trace him to the last home he had had. He'd been gone for over 10yrs and I had always wondered what had become of him.

well, i did find a few things out but it could be rumours, for a start the people i bought mine off changed his name and got him a passport, the people i bought him from had a sick daughter and just lost contact, i tried searching the name on the passport on facebook but her name seems to be very common on facebook! He is just a grey with hardly any markings that make him stand out other than a scar but i dont know when that happened. i will give facebook another go or i might write to the address, but im worried in case they moved and the new home owners end up with this random letter about tracing a horses past :D
