Where to start?

Hi guys and girls,

I live on the lancs/yorks border and I'm completely new to this and have never done any sort of hunting.

So I'd like some advice on what to do to get started?

My interest stemmed from watching 'meatEater' on Netflix. It made me realise that I've always been interested in subsistence living and figured I'd reach out for some advice.

I'd love to go on some sort of inexpensive trip for a long weekend or something but figured it might take some prep?

I think you are talking about a different form of hunting. A forum for subsistence living and / or the countryside alliance might be more suitable.

This forum is about the sport (and wildlife management) of hunting with hounds, which is often (not always) followed on horse back. In Britain, 'hunting' usually refers to the use of hounds, unlike America where it means almost anything under the sun. It sounds to me like you are interested in woodcraft/living wild, and as part of that some sort of hunting/gathering. We do have deer stalking in Britain and certainly around where you are, which uses high powered rifles to shoot deer, but this requires a lot of experience and certification. Many people catch and eat rabbits, which can be done using snares, firearms, or dogs (scenting hounds or sighthounds like lurchers) which might be the sort of hunting you are hoping to achieve - it is important to note this can only be done on your own land or where you have the permission of the land owner.

In short this is probably not the forum for you (unless it piques your interest in hunting with hounds in which case please do become addicted like the rest of us!). You could try googling "deer stalking forum" or "rabbit shooting forum" or "ferreting forum" or "living wild forum" as there are definitely forums out there that might be able to help you out!

Yes I guess i imagined I'd start with rabbits, pigeons and pheasants, even fishing and then maybe progress to the deers and hunting with hounds.
