I'm planning on visiting York and the surroundings for a few days in October and am looking for recommendations on places to stay/avoid. I'd like to do a bit of riding while in the area also, so if anyone knows of anywhere that does decent hacking that would also be suitable for my 12yo niece who hasn't done much riding. Plus any recommendations on other fun outdoors activities would be great :) x

Will you be driving? York is lovely but very congested. Make sure your accommodation has some parking. There are loads of great trips in and around York. Knaresborough , Harrogate, Scarborough (all by train). Castle Howard, Whitby, loads of pretty villages by car. There are some out of town amusement park but not my thing so can't comment. Leeds for shopping ( Harvey Nicks etc). As regards riding, I think a lot of places insist on being able to canter before they will let you hack out. Try Sicklinghall (excellent hacking) or places on the North York Moors might have more trekking options - better for a beginner. Near Pickering etc. Have a great time !

Boltby Treking Centre has some great rides, they are just near thirsk, off the A19. Helmsley has a treking centre, beautiful riding again around there. Traffic in York isn't too bad, better than say Leeds, however the shopping in Leeds is better. Designer outlet in York is pretty Naff. The city it's self if lovely with great places to eat and drink.
