We're looking for a 14.2hh pony for our child to jump bsja but can't afford to buy a proven pony at huge amounts. Novices that have done a bit also go for large sums but they all must start somewhere...?

Can anyone suggest where to look for a straight pony with some scope? The PC website is a start but some other websites have either very cheap and dodgy sounding ads or very expensive private ones. We've had our fingers burnt by a well known pony dealer in the past so recommendations would be appreciated!

I have to say when I was buying ponies in England, I bought almost all of them from adverts in the Freeads....all were priced waaaay below their market value and all were fabulous guys and girls. Make sure you have someone knowledgeable with you if you are not too great at vetting horses yourself though. Good luck!

I always buy mine locally. I put 'Wanted' adverts up in the local feed merchants and tack shops and also ask the visiting instructors and farriers. That way the history and temprement of the horse/pony is known. When viewing I always take someone with me as they are bound to notice something that I have missed! I always have them fully vetted and blood tested just in case - the most honest of owners may not know there is something wrong or brewing.

The price of ponies has gone through the roof at the moment, and because you want a decent jumping pony its going to cost more than just a happy hack, try the pony club because those ponies have done it all and dont usually go for mega bucks ,I must admit we wern't prepared to travel for miles to view ponies and ended up getting Toto from a good dealer who let us go and try him as many times as we wanted ( if you want to pm me I can give you her name) good luck in your search

Don't give up on dealers. Ask around and someone may know of a good dealer.

I know of someone who got a fabulous little 14.2hh jumping pony for just over 2k from a dealer locally. The other alternative is to go direct to the breeder and buy something green and invest in lessons with a good instructor.

I also ditto the feed merchant route. The ponies will be local and it's harder for sellers to lie or over price them.

I don't know how much you're willing to spend but Nicolette Gidley-Wright has sold some fab 14.2s, I think her prices start from £3k though.

Otherwise, look at Horsemart and local ads in tack shops and local newspapers.
