On the field adjoining where mine is are a number of horses which are out 24/7. Two weeks ago it was not exactly warm, raining day and night, and windy. The field has absolutely no shelter, just wire fencing so not even a hedge to get behind and the land is pretty flat so the wind is a major factor. One of the horses, a TB by the look of her wasn't rugged. After a good week of this the owner put a stable rug on her with a unfilled turnout on top. The stable rug made the turnout too small so a good foot of it stuck out at her quarters. A good way or ruining a stable rug given the fact that horses turn their quarters into the wind, but hey,not my problem. Then we had a day of glorious sunshine and it was really warm. For a further couple of days the weather was improved but not so sunny. The mare continued to be wearing two rugs. The owner then turned up and stripped the mare off again and since then it has barely stopped raining. This morning it was only 4 degrees at 9am, blowing a strong and bitter north easterly - it was actually snowing over my house 17 miles away - and pouring with rain with a forecast of this lasting all day. The poor mare was standing miserably with her head down and her back feet practically under her front ones. There is almost no grass to eat so her calorie intake isn't brilliant.
Doesn't anyone watch the weather forecast and act accordingly any more? Or is because they just can't be bothered to even come up and check on the poor animal?
