my shire x is in a kimblewick, thats what he came with, not quite sure what is supposed to do, so, what bit do you use and why.
 
i've always used a plain snaffle on my boy but his loan mummy decided he was better in a fulmer. personally i notice no difference in his "going" so i would prefer he was in his snaffle but she seem to think it makes him much easier. each to their own i suppose

Fergus goes best in a globe pelham, Ruby and Zeus go in a french link.
 
Waterford snaffle with hanging cheeks for my clyde x mare, as she has such a big fleshy mouth and it wraps round without any hard edges or pressure points,works for us but I am very light with her mouth.Jointed or plain snaffles rub her lips and can hit the roof of her mouth.Also she takes a 7inch bit and waterfords are easiest to add extra links to to fit her!

My ish has a french link snaffle, he has a classic tb type smaller mouth with no spare flesh so needs a slim bit that doesn't take up much room.

Is your shire x strong Kaz?You have to be very light in your hands when using a kimblewick as they can be very severe, and can sometimes make horses 'strong' as they resist the bit.Have you ever tried your horse in a snaffle?Some people automatically put shire types in a very strong bit when they would be fine in a snaffle.Maybe you could borrow a snaffle and see how he goes in the school?
 
french link snaffle. It is not perfect for us but I am yet to find one that is....it must be out there somewhere.
 
I use a full cheeked myler confort snaffle with fulmer loops for dressage and a myler low ported kimblewick with the reins on the top slot for jumping as I need a bit more control.
 
French link eggbut for the pony, and Fulmer snaffle on H.
Both were in hanging cheeks, but magic is such an easy pony she doesn't need it, and have just changed H's as it made his bridle loose.
 
well my new boy has come in a gag but i cnt tell diff between dutch and continental as i dnt tend to use theseill get piccies later my oldie is in a hanging cheek french link
 
Kimblewick. We tried goodness knows how many bits and she is by far happiest in this.

I am trying to get to do some low level dressage though so am trying to [persuade her that a snaffle is nice. So far she doesn't believe me.

Cuurrently a Myler Comfort Snaffle (no loops), I like the independant control of each side my horse - feels like you can "pick up" a shoulder and position it. I have a few other bits but he prefers this.
 
Sweet Iron Tom Thumb for fast hacks and jumping as she gets really over the top and strong. And just a kk ultra for schooling and walk and trot hacks x.
 
fulmer snaffle for schooling and hacking as it helps with his napping - going to use a pelham for showing and jumping though I think as we tend to get a little excited!
 
I use a dutch gag on most of mine, it has 3 rings so depending what your horse is doing you can have it on different strengths, the top ring is just like a snaffle.
When doing flat work one pony has it on the middle ring, when jumping and she gets stronger we put it on the bottom ring.
It can be used with double reins or roundings aswell
 
I use an 02 mouthpiece myler loose ring for schooling as horsey schools well in it and its dressage legal, hack out, jump, hunt and xc in a NS universal with or without the curb depending on how strong she is as it is one bit that she is manageable in and doesnt evade to badly (generally) when doing faster work.
 
mine is in a fulmer snaffle for schooling and a sweet iron tom thumb for anything else!!! He doesnt get madly strong when out but he can try it on and would rather have better brakes especially out on the roads where absolute control is needed!
 
TBx has a french link snaffle - she was in an Egbutt (I think) but she kept getting her tongue over it. She goes much better in the French link too

Ponio has a straight rubber bar training bit. She's doing ok in it but I can see I might have to put her in something else once she gets a rider on her

Fulmer snaffle for RS work and normal hacking. Loose ring snaffle with a lozenge for serious schooling and dressage comps. Hanging cheek snaffle for longer faster hacks/funrides and jumping as he gets v.strong and tends to raise his head.
