I backed my 5yr old 2mths ago using one of these which has served him well. However he has chewed it  and it is also a little large, which I think is encouraging to fuss alot and he keeps getting his tongue over the bit- not that he worries when he does it :p

*I had his teeth done 12 days ago, so I've ruled that out as an excuse for the fussing*

I am now wondering whether I should buy a smaller version of the same thing or whether to change now for something more permanent?

The bits I am considering are

myler level 1

NS starter

Sprenger KK ultra

or does anyone recommend anything else??

I would recommend getting a bit which is the correct size and making sure that it is adjusted properly, which tbh doesn't sound to be the case atm. If the horse is getting his tongue over the bit it is possibly fitted too low in his mouth.

Thanks for your reply. I know the post makes me sound like a numpty  :o I realise my first priority needs to be a bit that fits, but just wondering whether now is an appropriate time to switch brand / style too?

I would also say the bit is to low in the mouth if the Tongue is getting over the bit

Thanks for your reply Monsters (what a cool name!) yes the bit is sitting low in his mouth and this is causing the problem, but I couldn't get it to sit correctly in his mouth without jacking up his lips into a horrific 'joker' type smile  - hence the conclusion that the bit is too big and the decision to replace it :)

Obviously the type of bit that is suitable will differ depending on the type of horse - size of tongue, mouth conformation etc. If I was you I'd try and borrow different bits and see how the horse goes in them.

Saying that however, I voted NS - as my 4 year old is ridden in one and is very happy in it.

my horse seems to really like his NS starter bit. its cheaper than the kk's - i used kk ultra dynamic rs but didnt get as good a result as with the starter bit
