My daughter's mare is in a french link snaffle and schools and hacks nicely in it. She's jumped over the winter on a surface in the same bit with no problems however, now that she's jumping on grass we have a braking problem!

She did not like the hanging cheek snaffle, and have tried a waterford that she wasn't fussed about but didn't give us any extra brakes. She does not throw her head up in the air or anything, but is just fast and difficult to stop/turn after a jump (not ideal in a jump off!). We tried a pelham which was fantastic in terms of brakes but I've been told that this is not very good for jumping?

My daughter has reasonably light hands - definately not heavy handed (her instructor agrees with this).

Any suggestions???

I've never heard of a pelham not being good for jumping?! I always used to jump my old loan pony in one.. Never had any probs and was never told off for it, I've seen many horses jumping in it! Or is it another common problem like the dutch gag only being used with a single rein, then?

As for the bitting, if he goes well in a pelham, I'd continue riding him in that. If your daughter is light with her hands then it should be fine! Or maybe try a happy mouth Kimblewick then, just be sure to be extra light then! xx

a wilkie snaffle with a french link?

i school in a french link full cheek, and often hack in it too; and sometimes jump.. i just need a little bit extra breaking without going to extremes; so use a wilkie snaffle; very nice bit :)
