For a while I have been looking into bits for my youngster. I have got it down to 2!

So, its the Copper Lozenge Loose Ring Snaffle but then somewhere I read that the loose ring may catch the horses face, so is it better to go with an eggbutt snaffle with a central copper lozenge? Its taken me this long to decide this, so final decision then we're away :) Thank you!

loose rings can pinch the horse's lips, usually if they are too narrow.
however, some horses like the movement of the loose rings, and it can mean that you can keep your hands stiller.
fwiw though i'm not a big fan of copper, having been told that it can leach oxide into the horse's mouth... that could be untrue though, but i'm careful about what bits i use now. "sweet iron" bits do the same thing I think.

Initially had Dave in a fulmer to help with direction issues.....since then he's been in a loose ring sweet iron bradoon with copper lozenge (Shires I think) and absolutely loves it. I was conscious of the pinching but it never has, and if it did I would use doughnuts! I've just boughthim a new one as we've had theother so long it was looking as if it was breaking down. I'm really lucky, he'll even go XC in it!

Loose ring with a lozange and I'd go for a sweet iron, NS do some nice bits for youngsters staring out with their ridden work, a loose ring shouldn't pinch if it's the correct size but sometimes depeding on the shape cheeks and if they don't have quiet mouth, they can still pinch even if correctly sized, however you can buy pinchless ones (don't often see them though) or like others have said use rubber guards.

I have my man in a loose ring french link snaffle with a training lozenge and a pair of rubber guards on hand incase he looks like he will rub. Mine is a copper mix which is warmer and tastes nicer but is also harder than your usual straight copper, he has taken to it like a duck to water.

Cotswold make some really nice bits. I'd be going for loose ring, something like this:

I had my boy on a loose ring up until the weekend (had it on trial) and he suddenly started head shaking, walking backwards etc - He had a right strop because the loose ring had pinched him, and he got a small cut, so have now got an eggbutt on order, but prior to this he really liked it, so just hope he likes the eggbutt as much. If he does not, we will go back to the loose ring and will get some rubber guards for it, but before this happened, i think he really liked it, so am getting the same one, but fixed in an eggbutt.
