my almost 3 year old doesn't appreciate bits... The bit she came with was a straight bar rubber. She only has a tiny mouth and it looks to be a bit 'fat' for her. I now have been popping a jointed eggbut snaffle in now and aagain. Although she is better with this she still isn't entireky happy. Teeth have been checked so it's not that. It has been suggested to use a warmer metal or possibly something with keys. Any ideas guys?.

I had similar problem, found rubber too thick and she doesn't seem to like jointed bit with nut cracker action, I've since started using a nathe loose ring snaffle and she's going much better and happier in it, they bend like the rubber ones but are much thinner.

This is it -

It isn't strong enough for jumping so I'm looking at either dutch gag version or a double jointed one for faster work but as bits go really like them.

I'd go for a 10 mm or 12mm los or FL type then look for something that has a forgiving taste, copper is ok as warms up nicely in the mouth which is good for youngsters, sweat iron, solax, aurigan etc.

There is nothing wrong with starting the mouth with a rubber loose ring snaffle as they do have there advantages but may not suit your horse.

My 4yr old is in a french link loose ring and seems much happier (he came with a jointed d ring snaffle)

I wouldn't use keys, too much for a small mouth. My horse has settled beautifully in an eggbut straight flexi mouth bit. It isn't a flat rounded mouth piece but has smaller raised 'lumps' (run your finger & thumb down the sides of your other forefinger & as you go past the knuckles that will give you the idea of the 'lumps'). Also i think it's cheaper than a Nathe.
