Hi guys - i'm planning ahead for sping and starting to gather bits and bobs ready for backing my baby (she'll be 3 when being backed) she has already been bitted on a soft rubber loose ring snaffle, she has also had a french link loose ring snaffle in a few times to which she took no notice at all, she is a big lump standing at 16hh, WB x Section D.

Which bit will be best for backing her and introducing her to the world of riding ? thanks.

Tbh I'd go with what she's comfortable in

. I backed my youngster with a french link loose ring snaffle which he loved and he's still in one now. I did try a loose ring lozenge, but he actually went better in the french link

I used and still use a french link full cheek snaffle in mine. I dont like the nutcracker action of the jointed snaffle, makes them raise their heads.

a cheeked bit always helps with the steering!!!! but again what he is comfortable in and mouths in! have you had his teeth done, and checked for wolf teeth? good luck and have fun!!

I only ever use french link bits - I personally do not like single joint nutcracker action - think i'll go for the full cheek to help with the steering, good suggestion, thankyou for alll your replies.

Dentist is coming in new year to check her nashers.

I always use a full cheek snaffle to do my youngsters as it helps with steering and stops the bit getting pulled through their mouth.

Most of mine have been done in either a French link or Sprenger with the lozenge but one was only happy in a Happy Mouth single jointed snaffle.

it is a little bit a question of trial and error.

We started off with a loose ring lozenge, but noticed she seemed happier (at shows) in her in had bridle with little straight rubber snaffle, so changed bits to a straight bar happy mouth. Which she much prefered.

However we have only done light hacking (well, little walks round block) when it comes to proper schooling next yr i would prefer a double jointed bit so may have a go at changing back, but of course it will all depend on what she goes best in.

Full cheek french link. Full cheek helps with the steering, french link seems to be the most easily accepted bit.
