Which bit?

I have a thoroughbred who can get very strong in canter/gallop. He puts his head down very low and I am now struggling to hold and stop him after he has 'got-going'! I have always ridden him in an eggbutt snaffle but now think I need something that will give a little more control. Has anyone got any advice?

My TB mare did the same when we went XC etc, my instructor suggested a waterford snaffle it worked properly and it only cost £10.00 which was a bonus. I have my new youngster in it jumping and its working really well.

My TB mare is quite similar- I ride her in a cheltenham gag. It's a 'true' gag ie. it has a head-raising effect, so would probably do the trick. Depending on how yours goes you can either use 1 rein or two - I use 2 as mine is quite green so it helps with steering.

I would peronally try to hire a bit and see what one works better, as said you want something to help life thier head (think NS do something)

I also use a Cheltenham gag on Lance who puts his head down too, he is VERY strong and it gives excellent brakes. I use it with one rein.

Tom Thumb is brill for heads that go down, it managed to keep H's large powerful neck and head up !!! again you can you 2 reins or one

I canter/gallop in a 3 ring dutch gag, for galloping I use the ring below the snaffle ring. I find that this is a good braking system. I also watched racing for awhile, to learn how the jockeys stopped the racehorse. Use this technique with complete success

a waterford would be my first suggestion, as he won't be able to lean on it at all, with full cheeks if you want a bit of extra help steering.
