Which boots for xc?

Hey! I'm doing my first 2'6" hunter trials with my pony in 2 weeks and up til now have only bothered with brushing boots for front and back legs. These boots used to be my friend's mum's pony's boots so they are at least 20 years old and so are falling to pieces, hence why I need some new ones! At his old home, Star used to wear these boots for xc: http://www.robinsonsequestrian.com/horse-clothing/leg-foot-protection/competition-boots/neoprene-tendon-boots-black.html and we bought 2 pairs of them for him in his new home with us. They only came in one size but the old owner was quite sure they would fit him, giving us the link and everything. He's only 13'3hh but we tried them on him because they were such a good price. Surprisingly ;)they didn't fit but we could just send them back so we did, no hassle. Now I'm on the lookout for some nice boots that protect his legs as well as these except in his size;) Any recommendations would be welcomed but so far have been suggested either the Woof Wear club brushing boots: http://www.woofwear.com/for-horses/brushing-boots/club-brushing-boot_black---medium-extra-wide.html
(he doesn't brush, it's just for protection) or else the trizone all sport boots: http://www.equilibriumproducts.com/leg_protection/tri_zonereg_allsport_boot/

basically, which would you suggest out of the two!:)

the woof wear can match his xc colours, are about half the price of the others and will mold on his legs straight away. However, they don't offer as much protection as the others and look like the straps could come undone quickly.
Atm I prefer the tri zone protection- wise but they look like the horse would have to wear them in?! Any reviews?

Also, I've tried on my friend's woofs on Star and he is size small on his front and size medium on back. I've been told that the tri zone come up large so don't now whether to go down to an extra small on front and small on back with those? Obviously you don't know how thick Star's legs are but bearing in mind which size he is with the woofs which size would you go for in the tri zone?

p.s He'll be wearing over reach boots on the front too (recommended just for xc) would you say the rubber ones that can freely spin are good or would you personally prefer the more expensive ones with the anti spin device?

Thanks:) xx

I like premier equine xc boots, they have a sale on at this time of year so might be worth a look. We had a nasty bash and he broke a cannon guard and they are replacing them for me free of charge. They are very light weight and havnt rubbed his legs even when he was clipped out completly.

They look good, MagicMelon, but do they come up large? Star is size small and size medium in my friend's woofs so does anyone have any experience in that comparison of sizes? (i.e what size NEWs do you expect him to be if he is this size woofs?) :)

I decided to get Dave some decent boots for xc S&S, went for the equilibriums you have mentioned and SO pleased with them. Lightweight and breathable but VERY hardy and the service I had from Equilibrium was fab. Dave is 14.1 and I think I ordered the medium on the basis of his WW boots - they were huge but quickly exchanged for small ones. Dave still has club boots on his hinds (not double closure) though they are a few years old now and probably due for an update. Might well go for equilibrium again. Dont know if they still make them but DON'T be tempted bythe WW xc boots - they kind of wrap around the fetlock too. They would not stay put no matter how tight I did them up - spun around and sagged when they got wet. As for O/R I have shelled out on the Westropp petal boots - I like the idea that if pony stands on them the petals break off. And they are not nearly so noisy as they used to be!

I have weethabeeta pro tec support boots in from and norton support boots behind. Never had a prob! I once bought 'special' xc boots which had a support down the cannon bone but they rubbed badly :s

RoughcutDiamond that's exactly the sort of reply I wanted:) So would you recommend the all sports over the woof club brushing boots? Obviously you don't know Star's legs, but if he is small on front and medium on back in my friends woofs then would you say I should probably get him extra small for front and small for back in the tri zone if they come up big rather than the same sizes as the woofs if that makes sense?:) Thanks everyone else but I've heard such good reviews about the allsports I reckon I'll probably get them especially as they go down to xs size! xx

Make sure you are comparing apples with apples when you're looking at different boots.

Right now the WW boots you mention are brushing boots, and the Equilibrium are XC with a tendon/cannon guard. Two different boots designed to do two different jobs.

If you're only doing 2'6 fences a good set of brushing boots should be plenty of protection anyway IMHO.

I know that they're designed for different purposes but I wanted to hear reviews on both of them being used for xc. Because he used to have these: http://www.robinsonsequestrian.com/horse-clothing/leg-foot-protection/competition-boots/neoprene-tendon-boots-black.html boots in his old home and they used to compete him 2'9/3' courses, I wanted to look at some boots that give more protection than brushing boots, and wanted to hear if many people prefer the tri zone all sports to the woof wear brushing boots. We tried our friends pair of the exact same boots he used to wear in his old home on and they were miles too big for him, that's why we don't want him to wear those, but some that come in his size and offer the same amount of protection. Thanks!

To be honest I would measure his cannon bone and email or ring equilibrium to see what they recommend. I did suggest to them that some kind of measurement on their website might help people but doesn't seem they agreed!! They were very helpful as I said with me. I also thought a brushing boot would probably do the job for 2'6 courses but where's the point in buying those and then having to buy something a bit more protective later on.....unless of course you have no intention of increasing height. They're a super lightweight breathable boot which will be far better for his legs SJ than the tendon boots I bought him which are bulky and make his legs hot so we'll get plenty mileage for our money!

Okay, will measure his legs! I'm pretty sure I will get them as I've only had Star since January & I am hoping to increase the heights of our courses to the height he used to jump in his old home at xc (2ft9, 3ft)- I just don't want to do too much too soon as he's only 13'3hh. But like you say, I don't want to buy something else later on if I can just get some good boots right now:)
