I am currently with Anthony Evans for my 3.5t lorry insurance and breakdown. I have been very happy with them and will keep my insurance with them. However on my renewal they have noted that on my breakdown cover, they will no longer provide a replacement vehicle in the event of a breakdown, but instead will tow with horses on board. I wonder how this will affect the horse in my rear facing lorry - especially if it is a long journey on a motorway for instance - as the floor will be sloping towards the back of the lorry when towed, which is of course where the front of the horse is (sorry, not a great explanation!).

Who does everyone use for breakdown, do they provide replacement vehicles or is towing with horses in situ the norm now, and roughly how much do you pay (Anthony Evans is only £100 pa).

Thanks very much.

Following with interest, as I'm about to renew my insurance. Had previously used Anthony Evans, but have the same concerns as you about breakdown cover. Got a quote from Shearwater which isn't too bad, now just waiting for Julie Andrews and SEIB to get back to me.

I will never EVER have a vehicle towed with horses on board, with the only exception being under police request to get off a motorway or road to safe place.
Having travelled horses & ponies extentively across UK & to & from most of europe, I would not use a company that would only use this method.

Give them a call. They've now split their breakdown cover in to categories. The chap I spoke to the other day there said the highest level involves no towing with horses on board and has a replacement vehicle option so def worth clarifying with them before looking to switch

I'm happy to have my lorry towed with ponies on board but in saying that have used the Anthony Evans breakdown service four times in all and was only towed once (luckily lorry empty at time) the other three times they got me back on the road and I thought the service was great

I used to be them for insurance but stayed with Equine Rescue Services as hadn't heard great things about the breakdown service.

This year I moved to Shearwater they do a very good deal with insurance & breakdown (which is done by ERS). I had a blowout on the M1 a few weeks ago and they were fab.

I used to have my breakdown seperate with Equity Star. I believe these are who the big insurance companies use. I still have them but for trailer cover now. I bought it via Equestrian World Insurance Services and it was about £120 a year

I was with Anthony Evans and had to call them out. My lorry was recovered with my horse still on...I have now been told they are not supposed to do this. My lorry could have been fixed at the roadside but the mechanic did not want to do it. They took me home but they would not fix my lorry unless I paid to have it towed to the garage...I am now with NFU and have only had to use them once and fortunately had no horses on at the time

When I compared insurance a few years ago, I discounted Anthony Evans for that reason so I don't think it's a new thing It was a lot cheaper. I looked at using Anthony Evans for the insurance and OHTO which has an excellent reputation however the extra cost wiped out the savings on the insurance so I went with NFU and then Shearwater both of which use ERS

I've just got my renwal too, and they have changed their roadside rescue services. You could always, and still can, opt for a replacement horsebox. It is now their gold service, was full service, and costs more than their other breakdown services which (surprise) cost less. You get what you pay for.
