Now I know there has been heated debate over different horse breeds but I honestly can't see why anyone would want a dog other than a Labrador as a pet! Yes Im biased cos I have one (and have had 2 others previously) but they are gorgeous as puppies and adults, so laid back, loyal, fun, active but can be chilled in a second, get along with all other species, the list goes on! I can't see a down side to them!

I know a lot of it is to do with training but Labs just get on with life. They're great!

Everything you listed counts for Corgis too.....plus they're smaller so don't take up as much room so 'fit' in smaller houses :P

Personally, I don't think I'll ever have a lab. They're puppies for too long and I've seen what happens when they're not mental and physically exercise enough (chap 2 doors down has one). If I wanted something lab sized I'd get a Rotti or a Dobe :D

But Corgis are definitely the best breed ever :D

I hate to disagree Annette but Corgis are too small! To me small dog = nippy/yappy - LOL! Rotties + Dobs r scary looking (altho I have met some v lovely dopy friends Rotties), labs look cute all the time!

See I'm right!

(NB this is all tongue in cheek by the way, each to their own!).

They're not yappy or nippy though...I HATE little dogs and terriorists but Corgis are big dogs who've been knee capped ;) My favourite thing is when delivery people come to the door and comment on the big dog barking in the next room :D :p I never correct them either ;)

Welll, my mum used to breed German Shepherds, so they're my fave big dog. I used to go out aged 3 and feed 6 of them, they were so gentle and calm but guarded from intruders (we backed on to quite a rough estate) easy to walk and nice with other dogs.

However we now have a border terrier and apart from bogging off in her younger years in search for company she is so friendly, everyone loves her, she's active. She keeps up with a galloping horse, goes mousing for us and doesn't shed her coat! Very easy to care for, thinks she's a big dog and likes to hang around with the labs etc down the yard.

But Labradors all look the same ;)

And only come in three colours :p (well..the majority!)

Whereas mutt terriers come in a myriad of misshapen forms :D

Labs are the best :D I have two and they are the best :P Don't listen to the GSD Mafia or the Spangle Bridgade!

And Tinks, labs don't all look the same you cheeky mare :p My two look very different! (and not just colour wise ;))

*GASP* They come in beautiful, very beautiful, very very beautiful, very very very beautiful (I think u get the jist!) varieties!!!!

Ahhh the GS... it's a close 2nd. but again still a little scary looking. As a kid it was either a Lab or GS and after going to a rescue centre where the kennelled GS police dogs I went for the Lab! They were some scary looking dogs!

Terriorists are too independent and go off on their own too much.

Alright alright, they come in fat, fatter and skinny varieties as well. :p

**coughs** Spaniels!:D Life is never boring with a spaniel:rolleyes::D

Although I do also love labs and ideally would have one of each;) But my landlord would not approve of two dogs in this teeny house, and he may have a point:rolleyes:

Labs are lovely, but not a city dog IMO. Which is why I have a fab Boston terrier and the mellowest dog on the planet AKA Prince the pug. Bostons bark once a fortnight, so definitely no yapping where Stella is involved.

NO comment, I won't get into a doggi slating debate:p
I have propper dogs, nuff said:rolleyes:

Ditto this (damn what happened to that really annoying smirk smiley?) :p

Labradors are SO common darlings, you really aren't anyone unless you have a greyhound :p

Oh, and they eat less than labs too :D

You might expect me to leap to the defense of sibes, but after this morning I'm not going to...

Doesn't look so bad? It wasn't mud, it was cow slurry. :p

"I'm sorry, mum..."

Ha ha Blackcob, cow slurry is nothing - you just wait til you encounter fox or badger poo!

I encountered fox poo last weekend for the first time and OMG I've never smelt a smell like it!!! I had to bring him home in the car and then he was put straight in the shower and he still smelt of it afterwards.......

Bleurgh!!!

I adore Labradors, but wouldn't have one myself. Seen too many age really young due to joint issues. It's really sad seeing a relatively young dog become old much before their time with arthritis.

Apparently covering the relevant areas of the dog in tomato ketchup then washing it off is supposed to remove the smell :D Cant say I have ever tried it myself though :)

It's quite a whiff, no? The first time Henry found some, I actually threw him into the canal before I would let him into the car to go home and then bathed him twice in lavender baby shampoo and he still whiffed:eek::rolleyes:

Gundogs are my personal fav. Spaniels, pointers, setters I love them. Labs just aren't my cup of tea ( sorry) just a bit too heavy for me and lack interest I'm afraid :(

Spaniels have pretty feathers as do setters and lovely strokeable cuddlyness about them .
Pointers are aristocratic and just scrumptious and I really reallly want one.....!

Old English Mastiffs!

Huge softies. Dont need long walks or massive amounts of food.

The slobber is a bit of a negative though! But they dont roll in fox poo!:D And they dont do mud! They generally snore quite loudly! But they never fart!:D

Also GSDs, Retrievers, Setters, Irish Wolfhounds, Danes, Dobies...anything really! So long as it isnt an anklebiter.:D

If I had the time I would have a GSD tbh. I love the Mastiffs but dont think you can beat a good GSD. Mstiffs are not known for being easy to train whereas Shepherds are just so obliging. Mastiffs do what they want to do. If they dont want to do something they look at you in there " So make me" way!

hehehe, loving this thread!! So I'll add..... you're ALL wrong!!

What you need is a cross breed!! Takes the the best of two or more breeds and don't have the health issues of the purebreds!!!

OK seriously though, my lab x dalmation didn't read that book and must have takent the attention span of the dalmation with the joint problems of the labrador!!!! hahaha nice!! oh and she had the labrador puppy teething chewing issues (when she was a pup, along time ago now!)!! But really she is the BEST dog ever!!!
