Which cheap riding hat would you buy?

I often have people visit with children / adults who want to ride, sometimes they can ride and sometimes they can't. I have one big horse and two ponies that are pretty safe for them to sit on. I struggle to find hats to fit them - my head is small and usually my hats only fit the children, so finding anything for the adults to wear can be tricky. I'd like to buy two or three hats in a range of sizes as I really don't want anyone falling off and getting hurt. However I don't want to spend more than necessary. I don't care a bit about style or type, and it doesn't have to be top of the range, just safe enough if they do fall.

What's the cheapest (safe) hat you know of?

I would check the latest standards and then head off to Robinsons, Go Outdoors, Decathlon or some similar cheap multiple retailer and pick up whatever they have on offer that meets standards.

Probably try to get one of those with the dial things on the back as you can sort of make them fit to a degree if its just for a little gentle plod about. Ive got an old GPA of mine that my older nephew uses (not cheap obviously) and the smaller kids use my 5yo sons Gatehouse which has the dial on on the back. Id probably buy a couple of those lightweight endurance type ones as they seem to fit more heads than bog standard velvet / jocket skulls. The only cheap one that comes to mind is the "Start" one by Kramer Equestrian which is £25.

Decathalon do ones for less than £20 - I'd never buy a hat that doesn't meet standards, but I ride daily and do a fair bit of jumping and xc so a protective hat is crucial. For the odd plod these could be worth a look:

I hate those Decathlon ones with the elastic at the back. Lots of kids come with them to my daughters riding school and none of them fit them well.

Wow - I was just wondering over the hats on Decathlon for £11 (admittedly in a sale)! Food for thought. The reviews are good - I'm tempted to order one to see what they are like.

Just bear in mind the liability on you as owner if you have provided at hat which does not fit or is not up to standard. You may find your 3rd party insurance won't cover you. (None of the Fouganza hats on the link above meet any hat safety standard at all - not even the old BS(EN) one. The CE standard they refer to is about standardized labeling......)

Champion do cheap(ish) - about £40 - skulls which meet standards, last and are very comfortable - one is my everyday hat.
