After watching the showing today I have became slightly interested in taking part, however I have a 16hh 11yo sports horse and was wondering if there are any classes which would be suitable. I don't think I would go beyond local shows.

Also what is the correct turnout for both horse and rider? Which bits are allowed?

Sorry! I'm more of a jumper :o - but I love trying new things :D

Most recent one I have of her as a whole:

She could do Riding Horse/ Riding club horse/ working hunter classes.

You would need basic plain tack, a velvet browband for RH plain for workers.
Snaffle, double or pelham for RH, any bit for workers, snaffle usual for RCH.

Tweed jacket for all the above classes, shirt and tie, cream jods, long boots, gloves, spurs.

I'd say by your photo either Hack or Riding Horse.

Hack is all very twee - pretty browband, which should match your shirt and tie. Navy jacket, velvet hat, canaries, show cane etc.

Riding horse is relatively similar except things are slightly more plain - not as matchy matchy as Hack.

Tack should be plain, and both classes are plaited classes.

I'm more of a jumper too, but the odd bit of showing can be fun, and great experince for a young horse. Your mare is a beauty so you should do well :) Good luck!!

Oh, and for what is required riding wise, there are loads of threads on here that explain better than I could! :D

I thought the working hunters were more hogged heavy weights? If not silly me :o

Do you get penalised if you don't wear spurs?
Are they fussy about the mouthpiece on bits? My mare hates the cold metal so we have a happy mouth.

Thank you though!

Working hunters are not hogged they should be plaited and can be lightweight up to heavyweight and at local level will be very mixed in type, yours if she jumps nicely could do well.

No penalty for not wearing spurs, they are part of correct turnout but not essential.

The happy mouth will be fine, its all about how the horse goes with as much being correct and traditional as possible.

Brilliant, thank you! Have just looked at the schedule for the local show and I have my eye on Junior best rider & working hunter :)

Last thing: because I'm still classed as a junior (:() does this mean I have to wear jodhpur boots & clips?

Working hunter is supposed to be... a working hunter! As in something that will be good at hunting! I think at the higher levels it seems to be the really big ones.. not sure why that is! But in my experience if you jump a good round then you normally go pretty well. :)
