As poor Buddy is lame and losing all my entry money after withdrawing from Chatsworth i decided to try cheer myself up by taking my baby to do some in hand showing!! Well i plan to.... so i have had a good look and found few 'local' shows. My best option i think is afternoon classes and i have a choice of......

Class 27 – Three years and Under
Class 28 – Not Exceeding 14.2hh
Class 29 – Exceeding 14.2hh
Class 30 – Mixed Mountain and Moorland
Class 31 – Hunter/Cob (Horse/Pony may only enter either class 31 or 32)
Class 32 – Riding Pony/Horse
Class 33 – Veteran (Horse or Pony 15 years or over)
Class 34 – Coloured and Spotted

So question is which to do and how many?? do i trim his feathers whiskers etc??

Here he is..... big boy now its his 2nd birthday in 1 week can't believe it!!

I could take thuglet Merri instead - not sure cope with taking both so will have to choose one...

He is beautiful - going to be a cracking eventer!!

Little Merri looking rather smart now too.

I don't know anything about showing so nothing constructive to say. Would trim Fin's fetlocks though.

thank you i am proud of them both - yes hopefully Fin will be ready for BYEH in couple years thats my aim then on to eventing - little Merri well have to see how he turns out!! i think dressage for him.

I think you should take Fin to some PAVO in hand shows! He is looking very well.

Merri is very different isnt he, but boy will he turn heads!

What you are wearing is fine! would personally wear gloves, could swap jacket for a waistcoat if warm with a plain shirt.

Would trim Fin up, leave other one natural.

How can you do Veteran classes???

If they are all in hand classes you can do as many as you like lol, but usually they get bored. When we took the young horses out we stuck to doing just 2 classes.

He's lovely. I'd do the 3yrs and under, and the exceeding 14.2hh. He's a little bit inbetween a hunter and a riding horse at the moment (though I'm veering towards riding horse), and in riding horse/pony classes you could be against dainty show ponies, which you wouldn't be in the over 14.2hh section.

I'd just do 2 classes with a baby, and those ones are fairly close together so you won't be hanging around too long. Trim feathers, and plait or pull the tail. Whether to trim whiskers is up to you at local level, but if he's fluffy under the jawline, trim that if you can, and make sure his ears aren't too fluffy.

I'm not too hot on hairies, so I'll let someone else give you advice on Merri!

Don't think i can do PAVO as Tina hasn't got full papers - can't prove her sire??? or her Dams sire..... can't remember what passport actually says off top of head....

ooo yes gloves forgot those and yes will have to see if can dig waistcoat out from somewhere!

i just put all classes down.... think just do under 3 class and over 14'2 class as you say think 2 will be enough! think Fin can have day out this wkend and Merri another time he will take more washing with all his feathers and his coats not out fully yet.... yes he is different!! and makes me laugh all the time.
Will get trimming!! Had a practicing running round last night with Fin was v funny just have to rmember we're doing it for fun as with his performance not sure we'd be in line up bless him!!
Thanks Hun

wow thank you for that, its really interesting to hear and nice too. Great idea will go for those two classes thought they'd be best but now i know more about other classes def will do them thanks.
they don't start till 1.30 so plenty of time to get him ready and get there! think try plait his tail as never pulled one before will get him trimmed up just make sure he doesn't try to eat the scissors/trimmers!! not sure he'll let me near his ears... will take things gently see how we get on!
quite excited now lets hope he loads ok! should i put travel boots on?? introduce them this week before hand??

It is a shame you can't do both riding horse and hunter classes - as although he is more riding horse, it would give you two "proper" classes to enter where you would be against horses of a similar type. Definitely trim him up! as Virtual says, best not to keep him hanging around for too long, so choose a couple of classes that are close together.

I would say your dress is fine, but would include gloves and jod boots rather than trainers if possible. He looks great and looks like he has grown into his ears from the photos last year!

Is the other one a registered M&M?

Thanks this is so interesting i had no idea about riding and hunter - so are hunters typically more heavy weight? he has grown so much i hope he stops soon don't wnat a monster!! will look out some boots too good idea was just worried about running with him! ooo can't wait to get the trimmers out!!

Merri is reg Welsh D 'Blaengwen Grand Slam' we got him from market after losing Fin's mother to colic when he was 6 months old - Merri is only 3 days younger! we went to get pony came back with the little thuglet he was so poor but grown up rather nice i think......

Hunters tend to have a bigger frame than riding horses and more limb. If they are borderline, the better movers become riding horses (if they are under 16.3 - although there is no upper height limit, there are few riding horses over this height). He definitely looked more riding horse in last years pics, although he has quite a lot of limb so could easily be borderline. Trouble is, they often look completely different in real life than they do in a pic!

Jod boots will protect your feet better against flying hooves!

I know next to nothing about Ds, but you can definitely wear trainers when you show them. They have a completely different set of guidelines for the welsh than they do for all the others.

i think he is borderline..... he certainly has plenty of bone and think he'll make a good 16'2.... he was far more a pretty boy lasy year now he's just big boy!
his mum was 16'3 ISH and Sire is Pro Set so we think quite a nice mix...
never done any showing before but think i will a bit with him as he grows up as little pressure and gets him out seeing things.
Yes good point about hooves and boots - his do fly about abit! must make sure i get plenty of piccies!
not sure i'll ever run fast enough to show Merri off you have to be so fit!! his hooves fly about much more though!!
thanks again.

I agree totally with FMM about dress etc, I forgot to answer that part of your question! If you do any other shows with him, it would be useful to get opinions on whether he's a hunter or RH type - he really looks to have filled out between last year and this.

Ears are usually the tricky bit to trim. I tend to do it with scissors to start with, just pushing the sides of the ears together, and snipping off the fluffy bits that still stick out.

Wow - such a change from last year's pics to this years.
Merri is gorgeous too, my old horse is a sec D (look at page 102 of last week's H&H, thats what your boy is going to grow up to be (though in chestnut obviously)).
Agree with virtual - trimming ears is tricky. Flo isn't headshy, but has taken me over two years to have her truly confident with the scissors near her ears, so get practising as soon as possible.
Best of luck, and hoping for plenty of pictures.

Virtual - should she carry a cane with a youngster?

If she likes, it does complete the outfit (and can be useful!), but if it's too much to handle, it's not the end of the world not to have one.

FFM and virtual have given some great advice on your bay! with your welsh you will get told off for having a banged tail!! you will need to feather it just above his hocks, also pull at least and inch of mane, shows the neck off better, and you will want a welshie plait, which is one sinlge plait left long just behind the ear to show off the jawline, you are allowed to wear trainers to run a welsh - you would have touble if you didn't!! good luck with whoever you decide to take, the bay is a cracker and i don't normally go for that type of horse! the cob will make a lovely chap too, you are lucky with those two!

thanks i will look at H&H later, it is so interesting to know what he might turn out like!! never had welsh before.
hopefully persuade OH to be photographer and pray for nice weather!

Whoops did think about that when i was hacking it off.... it was just so long - so would i use a razor to feather it? Did wonder how to do his mane so will try and pull some out bit by bit and never knew about the plait so thanks for that! yes i def need trainers with him speedy little monster he is!
Glad you like Fin, its so nice to hear as i am obviously bias being their mum!!
Might have to sell Merri next year think after i've broken him in but we'll see, will only go to exceptional long term home!!!
Thanks again

you could use a razor, i have only ever done them by hand and have never dealt with a banged one before!! have a look at the WPCS website there's loads of info on there plus the breed standard and some cracking pics! good luck with whoever you take and let us know how you got on!
