I want to get Cass clipped in October as I'll be hunting and doing hunter trials every second weekend perhaps, and he'll be schooled at home 5 or 6 days a week. So, which clip should I go for? I was thinking of going for a blanket clip, I know that he'll have to have a rug when turned out. Any help appreciated

See how he goes, and how hot he gets with the workload. I always find as a rule it's best to start of with the lowest (most hair left on) clip, and then take more off if he's still hot.

Check the places he sweats too, if he only sweats on neck you'll just need a chaser etc etc!

I gave my Welshy a chaser clip last winter and it wasn't enough for the few times we hunted. Took him hours to dry off on the backend.

I'd go with a blanket clip, you can always take the rest off later on then if you need.

Is he living out 24/7 in winter, or in at night?

If you could clip sooner rather than later I would take the whole lot off (except for legs). Up until Decemberish you get regrowth fairly quickly(plus its not really cold until then) , the following clips you could just do a blanket.

Hi,
I have my horse clipped just once in October/ November and we have a hunter clip. We compete indoors show jumping and dressage. We ride 5-6 times a week either in the menage, or field or hack out. When we hack out, we always use an exercise blanket to keep her warm and she has the thickest rugs indoors and outdoors even though she is in an open barn at night. It depends on your stable management too. The more you take off, the more you have to put back on with rugs etc. If you have mediocre rugs, and she doesn`t sweat up much, then perhaps a blanket would be best.
