Which do you think is better?

Ok, which do you think is better in this situation...

Pony having its mane pulled and really dislikes it, to the point where it gets a bit dangerous, the two options are

1) Keep at it each day little bit at a time although pony shos no improvement, and still fights away

2) Twitch it and pony stands calmly while its mane is pulled in one go

There is no option of leaving it or using a solo comb (horrible things) Mane must be pulled as is a good foot long and needs to be plaited.

Rather have the pony stand calmly for an hour or so than be fannying about each day and getting wound up
 
Have you tried Oil of Cloves? I've heard that you can use it to numb the area you want to pull. My mare is a bit perverse I can't tug hair out sharply like I normally would but if I just slowly pull down it gives a bit at a time and then it doesn't seem to bother her.
 
I would try and go at it quietly over a matter of days.

But you sound as if you've tried that.

So - Twitch it.
 
I would use the solocomb, and a tail rake, achieves 90% same result and if only to be plaited then win win.
My lad doesnt do solocomb 9or scissors, yes..I in desperation I attempted to cut it. I twitched him for 2 mins, did a bit of pulling then managed to finish it without him twitched, just that inital calmer. Prefer not to twitch though, as think like pins and needles is sore when your coming 'out' of it!
 
yes i would twitch too!
get on with the job i say and show him he cant do that silly noncence! My TB IS fussy with getting her maned pulled, so i dont let my self get frustrated,.... on with the twitch and do a proper job, is what i do!....
if your still unsure, then i would combine the two...twitch and do a little bit at a time each day.
but i would gget straight in and show him that you mean business.....big pats afterwards!

I tried Clove Oil last week. It didn't work and horse had allergic reaction to it! Swollen and lost hair!

Luckily not on the mane, only the neck!

I used a mane/tail rake thanks to recomendation from someone on here and it worked a treat! I hate solocombs too. Always grows back with spikey bits.
 
I have a pony who we show at county level. As he's a cob he has to be hogged. He is not happy being clipped so I use sedolin to quieten and calm him both to do his mane and for clipping in the winter. The sadolin helps take the egde of him and I can get the deed quickly and safely for both him and me! My vet is happy to send it to me without call outs but I know some vets who wouldn't.
 
I just keep on at mine, he hates it but I perservere although he's not dangerous, just threatens to go up and shakes his mane about and leans back on the rope. I think when he was at college with me the yard staff who pulled it cross tied him and that did the trick! I did resort to razoring it the other day though as was looking ragged and was thinning too much as opposed to getting shorter so i razored it up short enough then oulled it so less 'trauma' for him!
