I've had problems with my dog bed's getting damp and smelling in winter, they're waterproof canvas oval beds that are in an old, cold house on concrete floors with no cellar.

I'm thinking of going down one of two routes this winter -

1. Back to the plastic tub beds with a waterproof canvas pad and a few fleece blankets.

2. Trying those raised beds, still with the canvas pads and fleeces.

I've used those tub beds before, the dogs seem to like lying in "rounded beds". The raised beds will not get damp underneath, I guess, but are they warm. Do any of you have them?

Like this? Kuranda bed, has lasted six years, no damage, indestructible (tested by very destructive dog!), orthopaedic, supportive, can get covers to fit, fits two full grown springers nicely. Bought to avoid drafts for arthritic dog. I just shove vet bed, blanket, fleece etc on top.

vet bed as the bedding inside a rounded bed platic tub?
vet bed is great..quite possibly the best and most practical bedding out there.
I use it at work all the time and have got more for at home as well! It wicks away dampness,ie water and urine to the under layer of the sheet so even if the area is damp the dog will not be lying in it and feeling cold,so should be good in a damp area, esp if you have a plastic underlay raising it off the ground.....its also near indestructable and can be washed at 90 degrees temp regularly with no ill effects and drys out quickly after washing..so same sheet can be used day in day out. Also now comes in a load of funky colours and patterns.

I dont actually sell the stuff...just a big fan

Yes, I like vet bed too, but the little lab gets cold and digs if he doesn't have more bed. (Mind you he won't dig holes in a plastic tub!). I like the idea of the raised bed, but my two seem to like to be lying against a curved wall if they can be, and I like that the back of the bed is above them as the house can sometimes be drafty. My other hesitation about the raised bed is one likes to sleep hanging out of the bed sometimes!

Those last two are along the lines of what they have now, but "tuffie"type material, and I'm finding when the dogs are damp (and a lab coat takes ages to dry properly, so in winter they're often damp) the beds are ending up damp underneath on the cold floor and getting smelly. Hence why I'm thinking it's either the plastic tubs, which will give them the back to curl up against, then fill them with easily washable padding and fleeces, or the raised beds, which won't touch the cold floor and should dry well. The floor in the kitchen has been bare fort he past few years, but will have either tiles or Lino on this winter.
