I have a TB Gelding, Saddle, back, teeth checked regularly, when I do up his dressage girth, he is far more agitated then when I do his long girth on his GP Saddle. I obviously do this gently and slowly, when I walk him in hand to the arena to mount he takes very short steps and is reluctant to walk forward, I mount with the girth very very loose and walk him around the arena, it doesn't take long, a circuit or 2 for him to start walking out, which I then starting tightening his girth hole by hole over about 10mins as I warm him up..His Girth is a straight, synthetic dressage girth.
Does anyone else have this with their horses & did using a shaped girth, a wool girth cover or elastic ends help them, any other suggestions very much appreciated, hate to see the boy uncomfortable !!!!

Had exactly this problem with my boy, who is a big Irish lump you wouldn't expect to be so sensitive. Originally I had a synthetic girth - a bit of shape but not much, and no elastic. I tried a Jaguar shaped leather girth with elastic in the middle, and he hated it (the leather was quite hard). I tried a straight softer leather girth with elastic (from Robinsons) and he didn't like that much, either. Eventually I found one by chance which had come free with a second hand saddle - it is a Wintec Elastic - there's one on Ebay at the mo -

For some reason he just likes it - it's very soft, which probably helps. Although it's not what I would have chosen, it seems to work for him. I think it's probably a matter of trial and error though. I haven't tried sheepskin.

Im pretty sure the favoured answers of ulcers might appear here :)

Might make a difference if you try a sheepskin cover, does he have any reaction to GP saddle?

Thanks guys, I've browsed the internet about this too and hearing good things about the Wintec Dressage Girth on there too! Yes the dreaded ulcers, this is the only symptom, happy to be groomed, rugged up, works well when warmed up, looks well and eats well, He's on a high fibre diet with Pink Powder and his droppings are fine. He is an x racer so ulcers could well be the problem.. His reaction with his GP saddle is significantly less, he really dislikes the Dressage Girth..but as Dressage is my thing I would like ideally to use my Dressage Saddle again.
