Hi all
What fly rug would you recommend for a rising 3yo three quarter TB?
She's had an allergic reaction to fly bites so needs a rug with a (detachable) neck cover but which allows air flow.
Ideas, please?

IMHO i would stear clear of the Masta fly rugs. They are cardboard stiff, badly slip and rub the shoulders red raw.
I use the Mark todd ones with detach neck and they are very good for the money. And wash up like new.

I am not a fan of Masta rugs but the only flyrug to have survived three years, and not rubbed, ripped apart or slipped is actually the Masta flyrug. Stear clear of weatherbeeta ones I got through three in one summer! Have heard good things about the Rambo one aswell.

Sorry to be contrary, but I didn't like the Mark Todd rug I had a few years ago. It rubbed all round the shoulders and the extra material in the shoulder area made my horse sweat.

But maybe they have improved the design now? It was a blue/red check one...

My Cob with sweet itch had a Riff Raff fly rug and I was impressed with it. It was made of a nice soft closely woven mesh, covered him ears to tail with a great belly flap and a very generous tail flap and didn't show any signs of falling apart. It was very reasonably priced too. I was having a look on eBay today for my new horse - there's a shop on there selling them off very cheaply - sadly not in the size I want though. Well worth a look IMO.

I found the Amigo rug too small in the chest for my horse but funnily the Amigo l/w to fits fine. I have the Premier Equine bug rug and thought it was ace, still as good as new after heavy use last summer. Funny thing is the Premier Equine l/w to wouldnt fit him round the chest. Odd rugs or odd horse

I like the Masta one, neck detatches easily and it didn't rub my old horse when others did. The weatherbeetas are not horse shaped at all and the gusset is about two inches long unless they've changed them. Whatever you get make sure its got a really good shoulder gusset and soft lining on the shoulders and down the mane.

I found the best fit fly rug is the Amigo with built in neck cover. It fits my TB perfectly, with no rubbing or slipping around.

Have to agree, the Amigo Bug Rug is the best I have found. My TB has to live in his 24x7 in the summer.

Luckily because they are fairly cheap was able to by two so have one for day and one for night.

It depends if you want it to last. My horse is quite hard on his rugs and I always thought he would have a fly rug ruined within a couple of days due to the majority being made from flimsy easily ripped material.
However he is about to go into his third summer with the Rambo fly rug and it still looks as good as new!! Fits beautifully, never rubs or moves and also wraps round the belly slightly. He has worn it on the hottest of days and is always cool underneath.
I have since bought another for my pony who can be hard to buy rugs for and it fits her beautifully too.

I can't rate the Rambo highly enough!

I have a 6'3" premier equine rug sweet itch buster (sold as a fly rug)... neck cover isn't detachable... got ear holes ... never been worn.. you can have it if you want?

Really rate the Rambo. Fits brilliant and on days like this, drizzly and very midgy, i can add the waterproof sheet underneath and he's still protected.

Thanks everybody - HHO is such a good resource for advice!
lilym - none of my herd will ever be 5'9" again, so no thanks!
Zigzag - thank you very much for the offer of the sweet itch buster...but the vet suggested that heat may be a factor so I needed something with a more open mesh.

Ifield - thanks again for the link.
I've bought a Rambo Protector.
