I know that in essence there really is not that much difference, but I was wondering which kind of girth is best?(elacticated, weight spreading one, syntheic etc)
It is only for a baby who is being backed. I want it to last for a long time too! Thanks.

As wide as possible to disperse pressure and either no elastic or elastic at both ends. Barnsby do a good leather one that is wide and has elastic both ends. Also check that the buckles have recessed pins. If you look at the sweat flap on many saddles they have big dents where the pins have dug in to the leather and hence the horse.

Backing a baby is when its most important for them to be comfortable. I dont understand why people make do with ill fitting tack for the most important stage of a horses training!

Stubben cotton string girth or wintec chaffless girth are really good -they also do a nice shaped one too!

I had been using the wintec one that is elasticated throughout the entire girth.
However my saddler had just converted me to the professional choice girths, they are very flexible and soft yet really help in stopping the saddle moving, very beneficial when backing a baby.
They are not cheap but certainly out performs any other girth I have used

I have a lovely shaped leather girth with elastic at both ends - it was from Ebay and only £35 but it is lovely soft leather. You can really see when he moves that the cut-away shape prevents rubbing on the back of his front legs. My saddler was out last week and was very impressed with it (and especially with the price!). I've had it for about 18 months and it is in perfect condition, I think it will last a long time.

Agree with the Pro choice girths, either those or the string girths are the best IMHO. The Pro choice are probably more comfy as they are very wide and elasticated.
