Currently looking for a new girth for my ISH who is rather broad in the barrel...

Looking at the John Whitaker pressure relief girths and Cotswold Sport ergonomic girth and wondered if anyone uses/recommends either of these?

Also, elastic both ends or not? All suggestions welcome!

I haven't used either of the girths you mention.
I'd say either both end elastic or no elastic at all (definitely not just one side)

I have to say I am a massive convert to the professional choice girths, so that may be another to add to your list!

I have the ergonomic girth and it's fantastic. When you watch the horse move with it on, you really see the range of movement of the front legs and how a normal girth would restrict it. Definitely elastic both ends, as well.

Unfortunately I haven't used either that you mention but I use the wintec elasticated girth (elasticated all the way through)which is v easy to clean, comfortable (no pinching) and was recommended to me by several - including my saddle fitter.
Definately don't get one elasticated just on the one side as i could told this does all sorts of damage etc by my saddle fitter! And it should be quite a wide girth too apparently to prevent pinching and help distribute the weight or something. (I'm just repeating what I was told but it does actually work if you follow it)

Thanks

I had a different make of ergonomic and although it looked fine the hard leather on the outside managed to rub my boy

It is the Cotswold one - I got mine from Ebay (refreshingly cheap for a nice product). My horse only got rubbed once from it, and that was when a friend tacked up for me and put it on the wrong way around... ouch! So make sure you are careful with it!

Otherwise he has jumped up to about 1.20m and gone PN eventing without any rubs or saddle slipping. He is a 16.1 ISH, fairly standard conformation for the breed.

ok, well I must say he is very very prone to rubs but as he has a forward girth groove his elbows tend to get in the way which is why I had high hopes for the ergonomic one.

He currently wears and aerborn waffle one with elastic both ends and a sheepskin cover

and with his dressage saddle (this is new!) the girth actually sits better as it has both point and balance straps he has a thorogood shaped drsg girth with elastic both ends and no cover (we are trying it without!) no rubs yet.

He did have a leather cushioned atherstone but it gave him pressure points where it is narrow. Also tried a stuuben cord which I know lots of people liked but just too wide for me.

All replies very helpful.. currently using a Thorogood Airoform, which has been fine with no problems at all, but now have a new saddle with a shorter flap, and my boy has got fatter with the spring grass and his girth is now hard pressed to make ends meet! Was therefore thinking I should have one which is a better shape for jumping and has elastic on both sides but have looked at so many online I have now confused myself, hence the need for your replies...

I had the saddler out this morning to my very wide mare who has had some rubs lately and she recommended the Thorowgood Airoform girths for sensitive skins!

Hope this helps!

see the thorogood airoform was the first girth to give me rubs, hence why I am keeping a fleece cover on my aerborn one which is essentially the same apart from having the elastic at both ends.

my thorogood one had elastic only at one end, the aerborn has it at both.

Please note frank is a special case really! but my mums has also had a rub with a 1 elastic thorogood.

I went for the shires ergonomic leather girth for my boy with forward girth groove. It certinley helped keeping my saddle still and cost half price of all the others I were looking at.

Haven't used the two you mention but I've just bought a leather Native Pony Saddle girth which is elasticated both ends and gloriously padded - is nice and wide and contored as well.

Pony loves it. It is huge though and they do bigger sizes as well.

Personally I like elasticated at both ends although my saddle does move a bit on my roly-poly summer grass pony at the moment.
