Which Go Pro camera to buy? For hacking and use in the trailer?

I have decided to buy (or pass on the suggestion as I have a birthday coming up) that I'd like a Go Pro camera, but having looked at the various choices and whats available I am now totally confused. There is little point in having extras on it that I don't need.

Primarily I would like to use it when hacking. So either attached to my riding hat, or my chest. But would really like to use it as a camera in the trailer when travelling my horse, I think there are big stick on things I can attach it to in there possibly to the big window at the front.

A good battery life would be essential, as go on long hacks. And journeys in the trailer will be about 1 hour x 2 for the return journey. So 2 hours as a minimum with the option to carry extra charged batteries.

Whats best to buy, the latest version or the cheaper slightly outdated versions? I don't even mind a good 2nd hand one if it's in good condition and does it's job!

I've been eyeballing these for a while and I think I'll be getting one for my birthday. The Hero 4 seems to be the one to go for from my research.

Also - and I haven't looked this up yet but I will - but I was talking to a colleague about these cameras and he mentioned that he'd read that the head injury Michael Schmacher received in his skiing accident was made all the worse because he had a helmet cam on, which when he crashed the knock he took to the head was compounded in one particular area because of the camera and the small surface area the fixing took - therefore a tiny area took the majority of the brunt. Like I said I need to look into this, but it makes sense to me, and I shall be mounting any camera I get on a chest harness just in case.

Yes, a chest harness is much safer, but if you want it on your head, please please wear it on a strap so it can ping off.
Mine was stuck on to my hs1 and i landed directly onto it, I am still suffering the effects over a year later and on seeing the damage to my hat, I think I got off very lucky.

I have a go pro 3 black series and its wonderful and comes with a handy remote, but i would imagine the latest one can be found on a good deal.

LEGAL INFO

The driver is not permitted to view a screen showing the inside of the trailer when the vehicle is in motion

I am not quite sure of the logic of using one in the trailer,as I assume it just records footage.
ROG there is a way around that legal bit in a trailer. As long as you can see some of the road behind over the ramp you are ok.

Can you not see it filmed "live" from the trailer if the camera is in there? Linked to my phone - and viewed by the passenger and not me the driver to make it all legal and above board? Maybe I am wrong and it's not possible, but that's sort of the impression I had - but I don't own one or ever seen one work - so stand to be corrected?

What about in a lorry? I'm guessing it's going to be the same answer? :)
YES

Passenger is ok to view as long as driver cannot see the screen

I have a go pro Session and we love it! Bsst memories for the kids and me when out on fun rides or cross country. We love making a little film out of it. I decided to go for the small session one because I would find the other ones too bulky on your head.
We have been on loads of rides and it was enough memory and quality is great too.
