Have managed to borrow a friends muzzle until I find one, it is a Shires 'bucket' style one and I put it on him this morning.

I am wondering whether to get him the same one or go for the Dinky rugs one in stead?

He hadn't worked out how to eat through it by the time I left him this morning and I have someone else checking on him in a few hours to see if he's worked it out. To be honest, the hole is SO small I don't even understand how they are supposed to eat through it??

From my understanding, the Dinky ones have bigger holes and make it easier for the horse to work out how to eat, but also wear away quicker?

How long did it take your horse to work out how to eat through it? I tried poking grass up through it but he didn't seem interested :(

I hate the bucket ones. I use the Greenguards with the proper headcollar. They're much 'nicer' imo & the horses take to them better. A lot more expensive than the bucket ones though, but try ebay. One of mine has her Greenguard on 24/7 with no problems or rubs.
Failing that, some people make the holes in the bucket ones bigger. :)

I use the dinky muzzles, took both boys no more than half an hour to work them out. The whole muzzle is webbing so there are several 'grazing ' holes at the base. The only problem is the horses eventully make these holes larger. I will be buying new muzzles for next season but I would recomend them, they re very light & have been great to use.

My mate has one of each type for her boy - she rotates them according to how the grass is, how he is and whether one has rubbed him. Seems to work well. If your boy turns out to be cunning at breaking them/getting them off you may find one type is best, but you'd have to experiment to find out which... :)

I started mine in a bucket one and made the hole larger so that he could get the hang of it. After a few days he managed to rip a huge hole in the base where it had been weakened. Bought a new bucket style one and he manages perfectly fine with it. He can manage both long and short grass in it.
They will make "sad face" with it on - moping around not eating, but as soon as your back is turned they will go back to eating ;)
