which gullet is wider - wintec xxxw or thorowgood xxw?

my new mare (haflinger) is like a table - I would like to get her a nice new thorowgood cob saddle and have just taken a wither tracing (which is very nearly flat) as I am suspicious that she may be too wide for even their widest gullet. Have looked at the guide on the thorowgood website and holding my wither tracing up against it it looks far wider than the widest :-(

She currently has a wintec wide saddle with the widest gullet in (xxxw) which we can just get away with although in reality even that could do with being a smidgeon wider! So to owners of very wide horses I ask, what goes the widest, the wintec or the thorowgood? or am i looking at a more expensive saddle or a treeless?

Oh and yes of course the saddle will be fitted by a qualified saddler but I don't want to waste anyone's time if the thorowgood won't go wide enough in the first place.

It sounds like both will be too narrow.

I have a Haffy too, and have gone through about 5 different saddles before finding one that fits :/ He is currently in a saddle company saddle which has been made very wide by my fitter.

I'd get a fitter out to have a look.

Boo thumbs down lol!! Think will start by taking the wither tracing along to the saddlers to see what they say about it, really did want a thorowgood though

Do you? How interesting! Yet another reason to like highlands if they can take a decent sized saddle!

He is full 14.2, long pony and don't worry my saddler fit it! Its square backed so the panel is smaller!

Really welcome to come and see our ponies, Adorable Alice was quite impressed with Pearl!

My friend has a lusitano on competition livery - shes like a barrel and extremely wide - she got a native pony saddle for her, have you tried these?

The wintec are narrower as in XW vs XW but I don't know about the combo you describe. I had an XW gullet in the Kent and masters cob I had on my haffy but I didn't like it. We would have needed an Xxw eventually anyway. I think either wintec wide or thorowgood cob can be fine on a haffy if you are on a budget but it depends on the horse obviously. They both go pretty wide but normal wintec doesn't go anywhere near wide enough for us which was a shame as I liked the isabell.

We have a heather moffett flexee (enlightened equitation) it is leather treed so flexible, I love it so much more than the previous saddle, feels much like a treed saddle but closer contact, more around then horse than perched on top of it, doesn't slip anymore than previous one either and better for me and my haffy all round :)

I have an 18" on her but she is 15hh so depends on the back, it's not as important with this saddle but I could fit most 18" on her at a push, and I really need one as I am tall.

I did have a flexee saddle for my old horse which was fabulously comfortable but i did have a few issues with it - didn't like the girth straps and couldn't get on with it using a dressage girth, hated the giant knee blocks and really didn't feel that the panel fabric would have stood up to years of use as seemed a bit thin and had loads of hair stuck in it if that makes sense? Also didn't really like the shoulder shims - together with the knee blocks the saddle flaps stuck out loads at the sides!

I'm seriously considering getting a barefoot saddle if i can't find another one wide enough!

Hi Op sorry to bring up old post, i just wondered how you got on with your saddle search? I have just bought a saddle company saddle which has been fitted to my table top croup high no withered New Forest, and he is now expressing pain when i put it on and do up the girth! Even had physio out recently.

Urghh, saddles what a nightmare! A thorowgood t4 cob and two barefoots later I have settled on the new style wintec wide.... It came with a full set of riser things that I haven't used but nice to know I have them if needed.

The thorowgood slipped to the side despite correct gullet etc, don't think it suited her shape that well, I felt totally unsupported and all over the place in the barefoot, but the wintec wide is comfy, doesn't slip and she seems happy!
Horses for courses really but think I have finally found 'the one', no idea whether this will be useful to you!

Oh gosh, how weird. I had a TG Cob for my table-top barrel boy and found that it permanently slipped to the right. We also now have a Wintec Wide 500 (after a Barefoot and a Flexee too!) with the 3XW gullet bar and are very happy with it.

I have barrel horses and I use iberian fit saddles from Zaldi. For me it's not just the width/ table top aspect of the body but also the big shoulder can throw some saddles back when the move off. If that makes sense. Then the fittings all for nothing! One of mine has to have a crupper and breast strap at certain levels of muscle/ types of work.

Makes perfect sense, mine has a big shoulder too but the wintec is quite straight cut so it doesnt move back, all in all I'm happy with it...... For now (until I decide I want leather ...)
