Who do you use?

I've just called my car insurance company which I've been using for years and they tell me they don't insure converted 'white vans'.

There are plenty of posts on this forum suggesting that insurance is relatively inexpensive, but where do I start? Do I need to contact a horsebox specialist?

Whichever company you use, if you take out their breakdown cover, check the policy carefully - there is one very cheap company listed in the first reply to you, which I had the misfortune to use and needed recovery - after four hours on the hard shoulder of the M6 they decided they were going to do a front lift of the van with the horse inside still, and travelled well in excess of the speed limit to take it back to the yard. Despite me making complaints to the company about it, I didn't get a satisfactory reply, being told that the recovery vehicle had a speed limiter on so couldn't possibly have been travelling at excess speed. I was sitting next to the driver - he towed IN THE THIRD LANE of the motorway and the speedo indicated 85mph.

Four Counties insurance aren't bad - although they don't respond to e-mail queries - I sent them three queries about my policy last year and didn't get a reply - their recovery is with Equity Red Star, but I've not had reason to use it so can't comment on that.

This year I'll be renewing with Shearwater as they use Equine Rescue Services for their recovery - it is about £100 more per year over all, but the policy is far superior to some of the others I have seen.
You get what you pay for....

My 'canvan' is insured through shearwater.... Simply because they use equine rescue for breakdowns and they send fresh transport to take the horse home rather than towing it back. Mines about £340 including the breakdown cover.

Mine is thru equestrian world - and inc breakdown is £290 (breakdown is one where they send a horsebox for the horse and includes livery)
Mileage limited to 5000 a yr
