Hi

I'm currently insured with nfu but just had my renewal through and it's £15 more a month !

I was struggling to afford it as it was, so going to shop around. Had a quick look and e&l is loads cheaper but heard bad reports about them not paying out etc?

Any of you got any recommendations?

Thanks x

I have mine insured through KBIS, I've just started a claim with them and so far they've been really good. When I added the 2nd horse to the policy they were great and gave me the same discount I had for the first one :D

If you search on here you'll find a lot of negative things about E&L ;) I have no experience of them so can't comment!

A certain insurance company (beginning with e!) are really hard to get money out of and awful to deal with if you call to chase a claim. Also be wary that horse-insurance.co.uk are a divison of said company but they, funnily enough, dont mention this!

I have used NFU and petplan and I find very similar price wise but ALWAYS pay and are reliable. KBIS and SEIB are also good and reliable but not sure if cheaper or not?

Mine are all with Petplan, who have been absolutly fab with my claims including one for colic surgery a few months ago. Made it one less thing to stress about.

My 19yo (almost 20) is insured through Petplan, they were the only ones I could get to insure for more than physical injury. I made a claim last year (chipped pedal bone, which required surgery) and although it was difficult to get the ball rolling, they paid up with no issue. I currently have another claim running with them. They are always helpful and never had any issues. I have currently taken on a second horse and I have found KBIS the cheapest so pleased to see bitlessbills post.

I have had experience with E&L and all I can say is you may as well throw your money in the bin as be insured by them. I'm surprised if what they do is even legal though they seem to get away with it.

I insured my Arab mare with the E company, she died last year of a blood infection, they did not pay out and it cost me £894.00 that included the post mortem. They said it was because I did not keep them informed of any treatment in the last 17 years, she did not have any treatment, just normal vac's so there was nothing to report. Just to top it I got made redundant 4 days later. My vet recommended Pet Plan.

Use KBIS - 9 horses insured currently - claimed £8k in the last 2 yrs-all vet fees and not so much as a quibble - they have been absolutely superb. Highly recommended!

Ah yes, that old excuse. Yes, that is one of their favourites. Sorry to hear about your mare and redundancy. Thing that makes me mad is how all the horsey magazines still insert their leaflets. They end up catching the less experienced that way who are attracted by their glossy leaflets and low prices. Of course there is a good reason why their prices are so low. They do everything humanly possible to never pay out.

Have you thought about reducing the amount your horse is insured for and/or increasing your excess - you may find you can then afford to stay with NFU. I am also trying to find out if my tack is covered by my household insurance so I can take it off my NFU policy - just a thought.

I found SEIB cheaper and they pay out well. the other thing to consider is

NFU cover only half the cost of an MRI scan but also cover some travelling and stabling fees

SEIB cover full cost of MRI but nothing towards travelling and stabling

As someone else said maybe reduce the amount horse is insured for ?

£15 a month is an awful lot!!!!

It has put me off vet insurance now, the 2 Ive left are only insured for public liability, I have saved £700 so far by not insuring for vet and have that put away in case of emergency.

Intresting, these are things you tend to find out after you've taken the insurance, Does anyone know what you get with KBIS?

It depends on the policy level you take out, I have Gold and get £250 towards hospitaliastion, £0 for travel and as far as I know they don't have any clauses re MRI scans (just had a look through my policy docs). I have £5k vets fees per incident with an extension to £7.5k for colic, excess is £125, also get £500 for complimentary therapy and £200 for disposal (their word not mine).

Stoneways is another one to have a look at, friend at the yard has her enormous ID insured with them and they've always paid out and been helpful :)

I'm with Stoneways, they are quite a bit more reasonable than P Plan, although I have to say that I have been insured with Petplan in years gone by and they have been excellent as have NFU. I work within the Insurance industry, which helps when it comes to "discussing" claims, but I have never touch wood had a problem. Never gone anywhere near the E company and never would.

I posted on here a while back about Petplan increasing my insurance by £10 a month - (£35 to £45) and when I queried it (I have not made a claim) they said it was to do with increasing diagnostic capability and people claiming the maximum possible per claim. (ie MRI was not used 10 years ago, if a horse was lame, you box rested it, much cheaper than MRI!)
I got quotes from most other insurers (not E&L) and they were much of a muchness, so as I would be excluded for illness cover for 2 weeks under a new policy, I ended up sticking with Petplan.

Not Petplan- I can PM details but won't publicly post as it is currently on going!

However, I've heard brilliant things about KBIS and we are looking to moving to them :)

I was with E&L with my last boy. He severly fractured his pasturn in the field so had to be pts. They paid out within about 2 months for death and disposal. Maybe i was lucky?? but they were very nice over the phone etc BUT the previous year they did weasel there way out of paying for xrays and treatment for his chipped bone!! I dont know who il go with for the new one!!
