After a lot of thinking over I am going to be changing my car for a 4x4 however I am on a budget of 4-5k max and wondered which are the best to get?! I do around 400 miles a week at the moment hopefully going down to 300 in September so I need a decent mpg and my horse is 17.2hh so need good engine to tow him. Help and advice please!!

We have a Kia Sorento. Doesn't have quite the towing capacity of something like a defender but I only have one horse so I don't need the full 3.5 ton capacity. On the plus side it has a much better mpg than alot of 4x4s and will prob be a litte cheaper to buy than a disco or defender.

Make sure you buy one without a catalytic converter as 4x4s are currently being targeted. Mine was stolen off my ford ranger truck on Tues night! I could have it replaced at £685 but I am getting a decat pipe fitted instead! I love my Ranger at it dies around 370 miles to a tank!

Landrover all the way - Not that I'm bias or anything, but if you are friendly with some one who can tinker - deff worth its weight in gold. I just got my self an old rangerover classic 3.9 V8 ( dont get frightened) and its gas converted so its pretty cheap to run and tax etc, anything up to an early P38 model gives you the comfort and the build quality - be aware of engine models 4.3 as they have head gasket issues- if your after a pure towing vehicle - deff go for a defender 110 XX

My 2.7 TD Nissan Terrano will tow 2800kg & you would never know anything was on the box same as my friends 3.1 TD Isuzu Trooper. Aslong as its been well looked after & serviced regularly they'll never let you down. I'd personally go for something older & reliable in super good condition :)

I have a Kia Sorrento also and I love it. It has won loads of awards in it's class, reliable with a good MPG (38mpg I think). Definitely worth a look. Mine pulls my Equitrek Show Treka L with no probs. Manual has tow capacity of 3 tonne, Automatic 3.5 tonne. Lots of 4x4 for your money as it isn't a big 'brand' name.

I like the Kia sorento (did my trailer licence in 1) but there's only a couple in my budget at around 65-80k would you say this is a good mileage or do you start getting problems with them? Also does anyone own a Jeep Cherokee (not grand) quite a few on auto trader but towing weights are a bit confusing! Thanks for replies

Another vote for the Sorento here.Mine is a real workhorse and I just love it.It towed my trailer,2 ponies, all their associated tack, water, kit ect, plus 4 passengers effortlessly out of a muddy field over Easter.Mine was bought used,is an 07 plate and had 71,000 miles on the clock,so was under £9k.

Good you have B+E = less restrictions :)

I initially read that as a budget of £65K to £85K - dopey me :D

Mine is 2007 (had extended warranty that is just coming to an end) an had done 63000 miles. No problems to date but I do think anything you buy in your budget will have a problem at some stage - Landrover in particular! I always think the newer & lower mileage the vehicle the less likely & you will probably get a newer Sorrento for your money!

Im another ford ranger fan.. onto our second one.
I don t want to wee on your bonfire but the amount of mileage you are doing is going to cost a bomb in any 4x4. Ours is a 2010 model and fairly economical as far as 4x4 s go. When my dad took bad a couple of years ago I was doing mega miles in it and it nearly bankrupt me!

Haha yeah sorry ROG when I re read it I thought the same! Are the Kia sorentos good with mpg? I will be doing around 300-350 miles a week (well for 36 weeks) from September for my last yr of uni then hopefully I'll be doing less after that :-)

Yeah I was thinking about the fuel costs, I can't afford to keep small car and buy 4x4 so I may try and drive my boyfriends car when I need to go to uni as he doesn't drive too far to his work and that should hopefully save a lot on my fuel costs, thanks :-)

I have an automatic jeep Cherokee 2.5 ltr- quite expensive in diesel , about 80 quid a week (
I do 25 -30 miles a day) . it is very easy to drive- and I love the heated seats lol! I plan to tow with it when ive done the test.
