This year for the first time the race organisers are allowing T.B's to race against anglo arabs. This will be very interesting to see how they are preform.
By this happening and of course racing has to be fair, its telling us that there cant be anything in it, otherwise the racing would not go ahead. Hopefully this answers your question.
There is'nt many arab racing events during the course of the year, however I am planning to go and watch one.
Having had both - and they went like rockets, the TBs were smoother and faster in reality. My arab probably felt faster as she bounced along with head up even when flat out - bit like Tigger on Speed.
There is something about a TB flat out - both arab and TB were fast enough to make my eyes water and have people thing I was crying.
Although I love my hairies, I do miss that speed on occasion.
"Empirically it has been shown that only the Thoroughbred is faster than the Arab, but the latter is uncatchable at distances above thirty-five furlongs [4.4 miles]."
This is from the above article - so I guess it's just a question of distance
TBs = Sprinters
Arabs = Long Distance
Although IMO it doesn't really matter - without Arabs there wouldn't be any TBs so all praise the Arab for the speed it has given the TB he he x
I worked on a yard that had both Arabs and TB's, we trained on the flat and NH. So yes, I've ridden both.
Logically I'd have to say that the TBs ran faster purely because of their length of stride, but then I've never run them against each other.
Some of the Russian Arabs that were coming over from den Hartogs in Holland when I was involved were 16h+ and looked and felt like TBs.

It simply underlines the facts. TB's were allowed to run in Arab open races last year.
The TB's have to give the Arab's 21ib, because arabs are slow and this makes it fair.

Under 4.4 miles is not a sprint. 5f - 7F is a sprint.
Arabs are bred for stamina, hence they are good over long distances.
They are 2 totally different disciplines, and I dont think anyone can say that a long distance arab is fast - they would not lay up with a 3m chaser.
TB's are bred for speed, and unless you have ridden in races you will have no idea just how fast they can go. Even work riders have no idea, even a staying chaser goes at least 1/3 faster on the track, than his top speed at home.
I think that 4.4 miles may still be under the mark. If an arab could beat a TB over that far how come they dont let them run in the National, or long distance point to points?
Because they are slow, and would be a danger to themselves, their jockey, and all those around it.
