Just a bit of fun really, not a deadly serious question but we have just been discussing in our office how much
Mr Mackenzie has cost me this last month, they get to here all the phone calls when I'm either ring the vet/chiro sortying out my livery, ordering rugs online, saddle fitter, farrier...again.

So I asked if its cheaper having a children...well just the one that is and no I'm not getting broody lol.

Obviously livery prices vary and some months our monthly expenditure is more than others but I nearly cholked on my hobnob and tea and dropped of my chair when my colleague topped everything up on her calculator while I reeled everything off.

Of course the nursery fee's are expensive and they said sending them to school is a blessing and reduces a big cost but I'm just interested to see what the rest of you you mums with horses think?

hmmm....open nursery as well as a livery yard, I'm obviously in the wrong profession lol...and dreaming at that!

The thing is for some reason you're not allowed to stick your horse in a field and abandon it all day or if you're pushed for time get a friend to chuck them a bit of haylage...

CHILD most definitely!!
At least with a ahorse, if it gets tight you could loan, or worse case sell, don't think that is legal when it comes to children!!!
Also once a horse hits 5 yrs, thats pretty much it growing wise, any rugs etc will probably fit 5 more years later, but children NEVER seem to stop growing!!!

Horses don't keep asking for things, we just buy them things when we want to! They don't have to have the latest trainers/phones etc to keep up with their friends, and don't have ridiculously expensive birthday parties and loads and loads of presents that they never play with
wink.gif

When OH applied for a mortgage just after I met him, the woman at the bank was bemused as to why he was buying such a cheap house on what was a very good salary - he told her he had a horse and when they totted up his outgoings she was horrified, and said that's like having a child in private education
shocked.gif
Well, now we've got 2
grin.gif

Oh, and if it all got too expensive, we could just sell the horses - don't think you're allowed to do that with kids?

I have 2 horses and 1 child and none of them are cheap!!!

Vet bills for kids are non existent and you don't have to insure them!

I guess they probably work out about the same.

What I need is a livery yard with a creche!!! Anyone want to start one?

Horses are far more expensive IMO all kids need are a few toys to keep them happy, nappies, food, clothes. Its if your silly with what you buy and how much you pay for stuff it gets expensive.

Horses live in a field and dont nag at you 24/7!
Mine are grass livery and they cost more than what my daughter does accept birthdays and Xmas!

I think horses are more hassel having to go out in the, cold, wet, snow to see to them even if they live out you still have to go check them.At least when you have a child you can choose to go out or not and do things at your own set time.

As a mother of 2 kids with a TB on box rest for a tendon injury and ponio for kiddies, I would have actually said horses cost me more at the moment with lotions and potions for said injury as well as vets bills. But my 7 year old has just given me his Christmas list, all lego sets (including a star wars death star for £275, buggered if he's getting that- will make one out of the spongebob squarepants kit he got last christmas if I have to!) so, in my opinion, kids are more expensive as horses don't celebrate Christmas!!!

As a mum of a 14 year old and 12 year old and two horses - i'd say the most expensive is the child that wants the horse ! my youngest costs me a fortune with the two horses - the eldest is so undemanding and not into horses he's very cheap to keep !

But I wouldn't be without any of them (well the kids I would sometimes):)

I mean children are hassle for nagging at you constantly, wait till james hits 3:p:
All I need to do with my horses is check em over, make food up, give them their food, chuck haylage out and go, can have them done in 10 mins!

Children less expensive to run than horses - until they hit the teenage years. Then it's spend, spend, spend by them of YOUR money, if they can possibly get away with it.

Definately the horse - two teenage brutes cost much less and it tends to be one off expenses....although eldest is muttering about a car when/if he passes his test.
crazy.gif
....and I had a delgation a couple of weeks ago telling me how unfair it was that the horse had a new rug and they needed new clothes but had to wait until next pay day!!
grin.gif

Methinks I will be poor until they all leave

Well, with children you need to pay for childcare for a good few years, or give up your job. I compromised by working from home freelance, but my income must be about half what I was earning full time. There is no way my ponies cost the amount I have lost in earnings, so I would say children are more expensive.
Plus - I don't think my ponies are going to want to go to University in the future.
