I have a traditional hunting BP, but it's too small for my grey. Therefore I need to buy one in a smaller size and I've been wondering whether an elasticated breastgirth,v check, hunting BP or 5 point BP would be best?

Bumpedy bump.

Someone must have an opinion (this is HHO after all :p).

ETA. My hunting one is too big for the grey, hence needing a smaller one. I really should proof read before I post. Ooops.

I've got a hunting BP but I really want a 5 point . I've got an elasticated breastplate and find its a lot better for jumping in rather than my plain leather one as I always think the leather one restricts a bit but I might be wrong

I love my traditional hunting breastplates with detachable martingale attachments.

I wondered about a five point myself before I got above but none of them big enough for my lads.... so will stick to what works and be less fashionable.

i liked my hunting breast plate but then switched to a jumpers elasticated breast girth and all of a sudden my horse had a medium and extended trot which he never had before and he was making a better shape jumping... i didnt realise how much it was restricting his movement... at some point i will get around to buying a 5 point but until then i will carry on with my elastic breast girth :o

please note that my horse is built like a brick out house and has a very broad and deep chest. Also he has a large trot and canter so some horses will not be as restricted as he was :)

Are the jumper breast girths the ones with one wide piece of elastic with a strap on each end? Confuses me how every breast plate seems to have at least 3 names!

With my eventer I use mine for extra safety, just incase something happens. I don't need the martingale attachments as he doesn't throw his head around, so I don't have a breastplate with them on.
I use one of these on him (excuse the size)

With a younger or more inexperienced horse (not a breaker), I school in a breastplate/martingale as I don't want them to get the idea that head up = no work. It is not there to allow me to slack off and not work them correctly, but rather as a back up just incase. As soon as the horse is more confident, then it comes off.

When taking a green horse cross country for the first time, I always have a 5 point on.

IMO it depends what you are using it for... Jumping, hacking out, schooling? Each horse is different and I don't believe in throwing gadgets on them just because everyone else is doing it. I prefer to use the least amount of gear that I have to.

It's for my young arab who will be brought back into work having been backed last year. She twiddles her head in the typical arab snaking way, so I will need a running martingale. I want to have a neck strap to grab if needed (hopefully not often ;) ). I will be hacking her up and down some steep hills and we will pop a few small jumps when she's ready. She has been known to rear too. I want a jack of all trades breastplate really, so maybe a 5-point would be best?

ive just bought the shires salisbury 5 point for £69.99 and its brilliant! its also got a detachable running martingale(previously i bought a cheaper one £39.99 i think it was a shires windsor and that was HORRIBLE) the salisbury one so much better quality and fits beautifully. the cheap one wasnt sized right at all and smelt awful. :(

What size did you get for your horse and what height and build is your horse? I have read in reviews that some people find that the Salisbury comes up a little small.

i got a full size and theres loads of adjustment and hes lightweight anglo arab who 16.2hh so i would say very true to size.:)
