Okay so I need some help, as the title says really. I originally had my 2 and a half year old filly on safe and sound when I first got her a couple of months ago. She was fine on it but i was worried that it wouldn't be enough for her over winter so changed to something else. I have her on apple chaff, high fibre nuts and a small amount of top line cubes also a dollop of speedibeet. She also has benevit (vit min sup) and garlic. She has got quite unpredictable and skittish and I'm assuming it's the feed. I'd like to take her back on to a high fibre low sugar diet such as happy hoof, safe and sound, healthy hooves or something similar. Advice much appreciated.

Both my horses are on safe and sound ( neither have any weight issues though) I find that this is a well balanced, almost complete feed containing all the vits and mins they need. I also give them Dodson and Horrell High fibre cubes. plus they have a mineral lock in their stables and add lib hay.

The safe and sound shouldn't really send your horse loopy. That may be more to do with the weather and her age. Take her off the speedibeet and topline cubes for a while and see if that helps. The more simpler the diet the better. Personally, I think the safe and sound, high fibre nuts and hay would be more than enough for her.

The safe and sound didn't send her loopy which is why I'm considering putting her back on it. It's the new diet that she's acting differently on.

I personally would get some sound advice from a reputable Feed Merchants. They know their products and I have done this myself and not had any problems.

I use Safe and Sound. I did use Happy Hoof but my farrier strongly advised against it. Don't know quite why, it was one of those "in passing" recommendations and I was happy to change as he is a fab farrier and I wasn't fussed by brand.

my yearling is on mainly Safe and Sound, with a handful of Alfa Oil and small scoop of D&H Build up mixed with sugarbeet and I will not look to change his feed unless he starts to lose some weight.
TBH all my horses are fed Safe and Sound.........

I had trouble with Happyhoof with a pony that turned out to be sugar/molasses intolerant. The happyhoof was the last thing I changed/elimiated in his diet and bingo - overnight the pony had a major personality transplant for the better.

So, personally I would take her off the happyhoof and put her on something else. I've never tried safe and sound myself but have heard only good things about it from those who do use it.

We been on happy hoof for about 5 years now, with a double handfull of outshine apple and carrots added, if necessary in winter add some speedybeet, didn't need any last year or this year up to now, no izzyfizzyness.

my ex-lammi is on happy hoof - he only gets a handful morning and night to put his cortaflex in, it works well for him...he's a part bred arab and in the past had never been particularly easy to keep weight on but bizarrely he doesn't need more than this, even in winter (other than a few hours grazing a day plus hay)
