Inspired by the towing speed thread, does anyone know which is the safest vehicle for towing?

We are looking to buy now, to pull an Ifor 510.

Obviously we are aware of the legal requirements for a vehicle towing a horsebox, but what else should we be considering in our purchase?

Does anyone know if any research has been done?

Any & all thoughts much appreciated! :)

When we were looking at buying a trailer to tow 510 with, yr 2000, we were looking at a disco, but the guy in there, who sells them, sales person, whatever you call them, actually advised us AGAINST one. He informed us the Isuzu Trooper was the best option. Not sure if this is still the case though.

Hope this helps!

Husband - 35 years mechanic
1000's of recovered vehicles.

On the 4 X 4 side, this is his opinon.

Land Rovers. Discos - only attended ones for flat batteries ir flat tyres with break-downs. Towed in crashed ones or wrong fuel put in!

The most 4 x 4's he has towed in are Kia's, BMW and Mercedes, due to mechanical faults.

NEVER towed in a Ford Maverick which I used to have, only sold because it was short-wheel-based and needed long for weight ratio for towing.

We have an 03 L200 and a TD5 Disco, had the disco just shy of 10 years, apart from usual service and replacing brake pads etc. NEVER has it broken down.

The old disco we flogged years ago (M reg) is still going strong for the person we sold it to!
