What would be the best joint supplements to use for a horse who has had ligament and tendon probs in the past and also has arthritis. Only 13 so not really that old. I've been using pure Glucosamine HCL and pure MSM but wondered if there was a better product on the market. I also give her Super solvitax mobility but am looking for a supplement that makes the best use of Glucosamine and MSM in the body and also if there is a separate product to incorporate hyaluronic acid.

Any advice much appreciated

I use Vita Flex Flex Free Maximum Strength. It's 100% pure chrondroitin sulphate. It's £90 for a 4ox tub from Ireland (can't find it in the UK) but I got 8oz from USA for £92 incl p&p.

It's worked miracles on my QH who has arthritis in just about every joint according to the vet. She is 100% sound and very active!

I use cortaflex and cider vinegar, they work great. A few of my friends use newmarket joint supplement and swear by that also.

why dont you try the products from a company called equine answers they have joint supplements which are alot cheaper than the usual glucosamine products and are just as good they also do cider vinegar which i hughly rate-

I use cortaflex on my jumper and it's done him the world of good

Im about to start trialing Pernamax on myself for a very similar problem, joint and ligament damage. They sell both human and animal/equine versions and it contain green lipped mussel extracts. I know Tia had great success feeding GLMs to one of her dogs so am hoping they will sort me out too.

Worth investigating the horse version I think.

Other than that Id say Cortaflex or Cortavet.

We had the stallion on liquid cortaflex with some success, but tried Science with Nature's multiplex HA and the results were amazing. Within a week his paces had changed to looser and longer strides, and he has stayed that way.
It's a lot cheaper than Cortaflex too!
I was so impressed I emailed them thanking them for the product, and they offered to sponsor the stallion and my daughter.
That was a bonus I admit, but we genuinely use the stuff and love it..
here's a link to their website www.swnh.co.uk
I think it should do the job you require.

There is a site that I use called nutritional scientific products that sell joint and hoof products etc and they are very competitive with prices .They breakdown whats used in the supplement to compare with similiar and more expensive named supplements.I have used them for 2 years and found them very good.

For my tb mare (19yrs) with blown tendons (happened when she was young due to racing) and arthritis - I use Newmarket Joint Supplement (recommended by vet and an equine veterinary hospital)..she did have veterinary treatment initially and remedial shoeing thereafter when in work.
I worked in conjunction with my vet/clinic as to what was best for my mare...as the options are many and varied.

My horse used to be on cosequin (similar to synequin) which was costing me and absolute fortune, so my vet recommended the strongest of the Cortaflex range, which is the one with the yellow lid. He reckoned that is the strongest of the non-prescriptions ones on the market.

I haven't noticed any difference in him (as in, he's not getting worse through moving off cosequine and onto the cortaflex) so am very pleased. It's still expensive, but I am on the lowest dose, so my little tub seems to be lasting a long time.

ExtraFlex HA is the ultimate joint supplement, containing a remarkable combination of supportive compounds to help maintain strong, healthy joint tissue and support good joint health and mobility. From FEEDMARK

I use this on my 20 year old and he is like a spring chickhen!

would also recommend Flexijoint. my 27yo mare has been on it for 5 years, had her on cortaflex before that and never saw or felt a difference but this was fab. she had never been on a supplement before (ex-riding school) and was stiff with no zest for lif - last year i took her on 2 sposored rides and she spent a good portion of the ride on her back legs, going sideways, trotting like a hackney pony, and jumpoing anything i put in front of her - more like a 4 year old! she also suffered a huge number of injuries and strains in the first few years i had her (breaking down from the riding school life!) and i really think this made a huge difference. most people won't believe her age, and she still schools beautifully - 78% on our last prelim test!

i was recommended it by a friend who's ex-racer had had all the bones on the left hand side of his body broken in a freak field accident (amazingly he recovered and was sound!) and was v stiff before coming from pure msm to flexijoint. the difference in ridden work was outstanding.

its quite cheep too, from equimins. £45 pot will last me 5 months on minimum dose, would last a big horse 2.5-3months

Okay, I admit it, I have no life and am very very sad

But the cost of joint supps are close to my heart at the moment.

Most important to me is the concentration of the ingrediants and what it costs me to feed it at the highest dose (given I have a cripple)

So I have done a fair bit of research into whats out there and I have jotted below what some of the suppliments offer and what they cost.

At the moment I cannot bring cortaflex/cortavet into the equation as a direct comparison as they are marketed slightly differently, but the monthly loading dose for cortavet works out around £34 for 30 days

So for max loading dose for a 500kg horse:

Aviform Suppleaze Gold - current price £28.80 for 30 days, when special offer ends £39.95 for 30 days
For me the best I have found and will be purchasing shortly
(11g glucosamine, 4g chondroitin, 4.9g MSM, 80mg HA)

Riaflex Complete - £42 for 30 days
Not bad, not sure what significance the lack of HA has
(10g glucosamine, 4g chondroitin, 10g MSM, NO HA)

Feedmark Extraflex HA - £55.98 for 30 days
For me, price to high and chondroitin too low to be worth considering
(12g glucosamine, 1g chondroitin, 10g MSM, 75mg HA)

Vetvits Equiflex - £15.44 for 30 days
Okay so it's cheap but that is because the spec isn't that good
(10g glucosamine, 2g chondroitin, NO MSM, NO HA)

Here is the one Im trying:

FLUID ACTION® HA
25 mg/oz Sodium Hyaluronate,
5000 mg/oz glucosamine,
1000 mg/oz Vitamin C, and
100 mg/oz of MSM and Yucca.

Advantages of FLUID ACTION® HA:

*Sodium Hyaluronate (HA) varies in purity. Some brands list 100 mg HA -Sodium Hyaluronate, but if the purity is 80% or 90% you are NOT getting 100 mg.

**Finish Line assays the purity and compensates by adding more HA to assure you are getting what you should. For instance, if purity assays out at 90% we add 111.11 mg/oz to make it right.

well their website really isn't very clear.

To compare that product to the ones above i would want to feed 2 oz a day.
That would give
10g glucosamine, NO chondroitin, 0.2g MSM , 50mg HA
Pretty poor spec IMO and wouldn't be getting my money, don't know how much it costs to buy but but a 32oz tub would last 16 days fed at 2oz a day
